Burnley's Turf Moor unbeaten record this season continued as the Clarets drew 0-0 with Sunderland on Friday evening.
Both sides had opportunities to win the clash late on but the points were shared in east Lancashire.
Manager Vincent Kompany made three changes from the last league outing at Hull City after having his options bolstered following the return of Taylor Harwood-Bellis and Josh Brownhill from injury.
Brownhill and Harwood-Bellis replaced Johann Berg Gudmundsson and Hjalmar Ekdal respectively, with Manuel Benson coming in for Vitinho in attack.
First Half
After an even start, the first real chance of the game came midway in the first half when Barnes threaded a through ball into the path of Benson, who broke into the area and saw his attempted pass for Tella denied for a corner.
From the following corner Harwood-Bellis saw his well taken half-volley from close range denied by the palms of Patterson on the line and cleared away from danger.
Sunderland’s first effort of the night arrived on the half hour mark when Neil’s volley from the edge of the box was caught by Muric.
As the Clarets pushed for an opener, a glorious opportunity fell to Barnes after picking up a dinked ball into the area and curling a shot just over the crossbar.
Burnley were in control and Brownhill then tried to break the deadlock just before the break but his drilled strike from inside the box was blocked by Gooch and deflected out for a corner.
Second Half
The Clarets started on the front foot and just before the hour mark saw a good build-up lead to Zaroury teeing up Barnes in the area, only for the striker to steer the ball towards the bottom corner for Patterson to gather.
With the match still goalless heading towards the final 20 minutes, Kompany introduced Gudmundsson from the bench for Zaroury.
Tella then tried his luck from just outside box but his effort sailed into the hands of Patterson.
Despite the hosts' best efforts at claiming a late winner, the Black Cats held on to keep the Clarets at bay and ensure the honours were even.
