Good afternoon and welcome to Turf Moor for today’s game against Wigan Athletic.
We arrive at today on the back of our goalless draw at Bloomfield Road on Saturday. It was always going to be a tough away game, and we made lots of chances throughout the 90 minutes, however as Vincent said in his post-match interview it’s a point away from home and we move onto the next one.
Following the game, I was shocked and saddened to hear of the passing away of Blackpool fan, Tony Johnson. The thoughts and condolences of everybody at Burnley Football Club are with Tony’s family, friends and everyone at Blackpool Football Club at this difficult time.
Wednesday was International Women’s Day, and we are proud to celebrate at today’s fixture. Burnley FC Women’s Interim Manager Jay Bradford is our co-commentator for the game and players Millie Ravening and Dom Cooper attended Burnley College this morning to meet 100 junior girls’ players to enjoy a football session. It’s important that the players engage with junior girls’ teams, to encourage and inspire the younger generation.
We enjoyed some awards news this week. Congratulations to Vincent, who has won Sky Bet Championship Manager of the Month for February. This is the fourth time Vincent has won the award, which demonstrates the remarkable job he is doing here.
Also on the awards front, well done to Nathan Tella who has been nominated for the PFA Vertu Motors Fans' Player of the Month award for February.
Nathan enjoyed great success during the month, netting a brace against Ipswich Town in the FA Cup and his first senior hat-trick against Preston North End in the league. Clarets’ supporters can cast their votes for Nathan on the PFA website.
Last weekend I was delighted to attend Burnley FC in the Community’s Charity Dinner. As a Club, it’s important we show our support for the fantastic work the community carry out across the region.
It was a fabulous evening, thank you to the community participants who shared their inspiring stories, and with over £50,000 raised on the night it was a great success all round.
In support of the charity’s work, Anass Zaroury, Ameen Al-Dakhil and Halil Dervişoğlu attended community’s Clarets Welcome programme at The Leisure Box this week.
The original purpose of Clarets Welcome was to bring together young men who were displaced from Syria due to the ongoing conflict, and the doors are now open to males aged 16 and over who are new to the Burnley and East Lancashire area.
It was a great opportunity for the players to meet the Clarets Welcome group and show our support for such a worthwhile programme.
Back to this afternoon, best of luck to Vincent and the squad. Let’s aim for another three points on home turf.
Up the Clarets!
Alan
