Tony Philliskirk’s U18 side secured their second win of the season on Saturday afternoon, with a 3-1 win over Sunderland at the Academy of Light.
First-half goals from Dylan Moonan, Sam Unwin and Michael Mellon gave the Clarets a three-goal lead at the break, on a breezy afternoon in the North-East.
But an early goal from the hosts in the second-half, set up a nervy last half an hour for the visitors, despite having several chances to finish the Black Cats off.
And despite the youngsters taking home all three points, Philliskirk admits himself and his side were slightly frustrated to not put the game out of sight in the second-half.
Philliskirk said: “It’s a strange one really, we came off the pitch half disappointed that had conceded in the second-half and not played as well as the first 45.
“I thought the opening 20 minutes we were a bit sloppy, but then we got that great team goal, which was outstanding.
“Then went on to get a second and third and really dominated for the next 25 minutes.
“But we spoke at half-time about the next goal being important and not doing anything silly to give them a sneak back into the game.
“And then that’s what happened, they get a penalty and then have a spring in their step and we then took a step back, we missed so many chances, that we have to put away.
Clarets climb to seventh spot with victory over Toffees
“I thought we defender a bit better today than previous matches, but certainly from a forwards perspective, we could have scored five, six, seven and really put the game out of reach.
“So, that is where we just have to develop a little bit more, in the final third and finishing in front of goal.
“However, the fact some of the lads are coming off disappointed from a 3-1 win, shows the standards and passion they have set for themselves.
“It did get a bit scrappy, but at the end of the day we came away with a 3-1 win, after a very long trip up to the North-East, so I have to take the positives from that.”
