Millie Ravening has reiterated just how much a win over Newcastle United this afternoon would mean to her and her teammates, given the potential impact on the league table.
The Clarets sit 3rd in the Northern Premier Division of the FA Women’s National League with 26 points from 11 matches.
They’re behind Nottingham Forest, who are second with 30 points from 13, and Newcastle, who have 34 points having played 13 games too.
Burnley’s two games in hand present a good opportunity to gain ground further down the line, but beating the Magpies remains key with only one team gaining promotion to the Championship.
Speaking after a training session this week, Ravening said: “We’re all feeling good and gelling well.
“It’s a big game and we know they’re a good team, so we’ll need to try and play to our strengths and exploit their weaknesses.
“We’ll work hard, play as a team and score as many goals as we can, with the aim of getting three points.”
Burnley suffered a first league defeat of the season last time out, falling narrowly to Nottingham Forest. It isn’t something that’s affected the squad greatly, however, as Millie explained.
“We’ve all bounced back”, she said. “We know how hard it is to go a full season unbeaten and although we’re not used to losing much, it’s just proven to be a barrier that we’ll get over.
“It’s fine, we all understand that it’s happened and we are ready to go again and play as well as we can.”
The midfielder, who has been with the Club since the summer of 2021, is a vice captain alongside Georgia Marshall.
With Club captain Thea Paul undergoing a spell on the side-lines through injury, Ravening and Marshall have taken on matchday duties.
“Being captain doesn’t change the way I think or the way I play”, said the former. “It’s nice to have it - I took it on last year as well and was very grateful to do so. I hope the girls feel like I’m somebody they can come to for advice as well.”
The reverse fixture ended in a 0-0 draw at Kingston Park earlier this season, and Newcastle are expected to bring a large following with them to Lancashire.
With that in mind, Ravening continued: “Being such a big game does add an extra layer of excitement. Newcastle are a strong team and everybody knows that - we’ll play like we always do, be relaxed, be calm and go in level headed.
“A win would mean a lot. Three points is obviously the best outcome from any game, and it would mean everything to the girls, especially being at home.”
