The Clarets are delighted to add their congratulations to former England Futsal captain – and Burnley Academy coach – Stephen Daley on the award of an MBE.
Daley was honoured in the delayed Queen’s Birthday List for his services to para football and Futsal after collecting 143 caps for the Para Lions and competing in the 2017 and 2019 World Cups.
The 44-year-old captained the England partially sighted team and hung up his boots at the end of last year to focus on coaching for the Football Association and an impending role as the Para Lions Futsal coach.
In addition, Preston-based Daley – previously a Northern Ireland international up to the age of 18 – coaches in the foundation phase of the Clarets’ Academy following Futsal’s introduction to the coaching programme for Burnley’s young players and the successful move towards Category One grading.
“The club have been great with me since I’ve been there and hopefully it’s something we can look to expand across more age groups,” said Daley, whose work with the Clarets is currently on hold due to the Covid-19 restrictions in place around indoor football.
“Futsal is a different format of the game and really helps young players in their development in one-on-one situations, decision making and technique.
“It’s something I’ve loved playing and given me so much. You don’t play football to win individual awards but to get this honour is something special, particularly for my family as they’re the ones that make the biggest sacrifices.”
