Clarets host Latics at Turf Moor in all-North West battle

Burnley are in league action at Turf Moor for the first time this month on Saturday afternoon – 11th March – when Wigan Athletic are the visitors (3pm KO).

So far in March, the Clarets have beaten Fleetwood Town 1-0 on home soil to reach the last-eight of the Emirates FA Cup and drawn 0-0 at Blackpool in the Sky Bet Championship.

That goalless draw away against the Tangerines extended an unbeaten run in the league to 15 games.

And with another North West opponent to come on Saturday in the shape of Wigan, Vincent Kompany’s side top the table, sitting 17 points clear in the automatic promotion places.

Wigan Athletic

Promoted from Sky Bet League One last season, the Latics are embroiled in a fight against relegation this term to try and maintain their second-tier status.

Over the course of the campaign to date, they’ve had three separate permanent managers. Leam Richardson was proceeded by Kolo Touré, who failed to win any of his nine games in charge, and he was replaced by Shaun Maloney.

And although Maloney has overseen a slight upturn in fortunes, losing only two of his seven games in charge so far, Wigan remain bottom of the table.

One of those two defeats came away at West Bromwich Albion on Tuesday night, with Daryl Dike’s first half goal the difference between the two sides.

The last time we met

In what was a first competitive meeting for over eight years, the Clarets ran riot at Wigan’s D.W. Stadium earlier this season, winning 5-1 back in August.

Jay Rodriguez, Nathan Tella & Samuel Bastien were all on target while Josh Brownhill netted a brace.

The latest competitive meeting prior to that, in April 2014, saw Burnley seal promotion to the Premier League with a 2-0 victory at Turf Moor when Ashley Barnes & Michael Kightly were on target.

Saturday’s game will be the 25th between the pair in leagues & cups combined.
