The Clarets face Eddie Howe’s Newcastle United at home on Sunday knowing a win would ensure Premier League survival.
Burnley drew 1-1 at Villa Park on Thursday night with Ashley Barnes scoring from the spot and that point took the Clarets out of the relegation places ahead of Leeds United on goal difference.
Interim manager Mike Jackson knows Eddie Howe’s team will be tough opponents.
“Newcastle have done great. I watched their game against Arsenal. With that crowd behind them I thought they were brilliant. They’ve got a clear way they want to play. He’s done a really good job there.”
The former Tranmere Rovers and Shrewsbury Town manager knows Sunday is a massive game.
“Every game we have had since we came here, they’ve said you’ve got to get something from this and the lads have been delivering. They’ve had that around them for the last six or seven games. They are used to living in that.
“We know Sunday is going to be emotional. We’ve got to try and take that out of it. Use some of it. Use it for a bit of fire inside you as well. I’m sure we will go and attack the moment again.”
Burnley have taken 11 points from seven games under Jackson’s stewardship. Survival is the target.
“That’s what we want to happen. There is a lot of hard work to go into that before we try and achieve that goal. That’s what everyone has wanted since we’ve been here. We know what we need to do.”
Form
Burnley drew 1-1 at Villa Park on Thursday with Ashley Barnes converted a penalty late in the first half. Emiliano Buendia equalised for Steven Gerrard’s side. The Clarets have won three of their last four home games.
Newcastle United were bottom of the table in December. They went 12th after Monday’s 2-0 win over Arsenal. January signing Bruno Guimaraes sealed the win after Ben White had put through his own goal.
Opposition guide
Eddie Howe was manager at Turf Moor between January 2011 and October 2012.
He took over from Steve Bruce in December leading the Magpies to safety.
They have won four away games in the Premier League this season all under Howe. A 3-0 success at Norwich City last month followed away wins at Southampton, Brentford and Leeds United.
The former Bournemouth boss was pleased with the win over Champions League chasing Arsenal.
"I think in terms of performance that's the highest standard we've reached. That will be the marker we judge ourselves against now, knowing we're capable of delivering that. We have to get close to those levels, if not surpass them, on a consistent basis."
Howe has his eyes set on a top-ten finish, a position that seemed improbable when he took over at St James’ Park.
"I respect Burnley, and know the position they're in, but we have a job to do. We represent Newcastle and we're proud to do that. An opportunity to finish in the top ten shouldn't be underestimated so we'll give our all to try and achieve that."
Match stats
Ashley Barnes is set to make his 200th Premier League appearance for Burnley. He would be only the second player, after captain Ben Mee, to reach the landmark.
The last time Burnley ended a Premier League season with a win was the 1-0 success at Villa Park in 2015.
If he plays, it will be Jack Cork’s 300th Premier League appearance.
Chris Wood scored 49 Premier League goals for Burnley before his move to St James’ Park.
Kieran Trippier signed for Newcastle from Atletico Madrid in January. He played in the Premier League for the Clarets in 2014/15.
