After midweek success in the Carabao Cup, Burnley’s attention now turns back to the league & the final game before the World Cup break. With it on Sunday afternoon, comes an East Lancashire derby against Blackburn Rovers at Turf Moor (12.30pm KO).
Ashley Barnes’ header and Anass Zaroury’s brace saw a rotated Clarets side see off Crawley Town in the pair’s first-ever meeting on Tuesday evening, running out 3-1 winners.
The victory, which saw Marcel Lewis and 16-year-old Joe Bauress make their debuts late on, set up a Fourth Round tie in the competition away at Manchester United.

And despite other sides around them being in Sky Bet Championship action during midweek, Vincent Kompany’s side still top the table at the time of writing heading into Sunday’s East Lancashire derby.

Blackburn Rovers
Like the Clarets, Blackburn also experienced a change in manager over the course of the summer with former Danish international Jon Dahl Tomasson taking over at Ewood Park.
Rovers were relegated from the Premier League in 2012, and are yet to have made it back, coming closest in 2013/14 & 2021/22 with 8th-placed finishes in both of those campaigns.
Also spending a season in Sky Bet League One over the course of their 10 years outside the top flight, Blackburn this season are yet to draw a game in 20 league outings. With 12 wins and eight defeats to date, Tomasson’s side sit 2nd at the time of writing, two points behind Burnley.
During midweek, Rovers also got through to the Fourth Round of the Carabao Cup with a win on penalties at West Ham United.
The Last Time we Met
Separated by circa 15 miles, this will be the first East Lancashire derby in a league game for over six years, since the 2015/16 season.
Burnley completed the double over the course of that campaign on the way to the title, winning both games by 1-0 margins. Scott Arfield was the hero away from home, rifling in the winner, while Andre Gray hit the winner from the penalty spot in the reverse fixture at Turf Moor.

The pair’s most recent meeting though came in the Carabao Cup back in August 2017 at Ewood Park when we extended our unbeaten run in the derby to seven games & our winning run to four.
Reigning supreme courtesy of a 2-0 win with first half goals from Jack Cork and Robbie Brady, the Clarets progressed into the Second Round of the competition against then-Sky Bet League One Rovers.
Charlie Taylor made his Burnley debut that evening while Barnes, Kevin Long & Ashley Westwood all started. Johann Berg Gudmundsson meanwhile came off the bench.
