A brace from Marcus Edwards saw the Clarets draw with Shrewsbury Town in a pre-season friendly on Saturday afternoon.

The Burnley squad was split in two for games against Huddersfield and Shrewsbury with Mike Jackson taking the team in Shropshire.

The Clarets took the opportunity to rotate the squad with several U21s and U18s supplementing the first team outfits.

Nine minutes in a mix up at the back led to Shrewsbury's John Marquis netting to put the home side in front.

There were shouts for a penalty when Marcus Edwards was brought down in the box, but referee Ben Speedie waved away calls.

Burnley made a change when Axel Tuanzebe made way for Shurandy Sambo in the 23rd minute.

The Clarets did come close to finding an equaliser when Jaydon Banel flashed the ball across goal, but Oliver Sonne couldn't quite connect, then seconds later it was Banel again who was lively in the box, but his shot was well blocked by Elyh Harrison and Ashley Barnes couldn't get to the rebound.

The last effort of the first half saw Marcus Edwards try his luck from 30 yards out, but Harrison was well placed to collect.

It was Edwards who did bring the sides level with a well taken free-kick on the 52nd minute.

Shrewsbury keeper Harrison stopped the Clarets from increasing their advantage by keeping out an Edwards effort. He was called into action shortly after when Joe Worrall was fouled in the box with Edwards in place to put home the resulting penalty.

Jackson brought on six youngsters in the 82nd minute, with Kian McMahon-Brown, Murray Campbell, Joe Ashton, Noah Adekoya, Oluwasen Adewumi and Jesse Williams introduced for first teamers Edwards, Banel, Joe Worrall, Hannes Delcroix, Oliver Sonne and Lucas Pires.

The youngsters were put to the test from the off, Adekoya did well to clear the ball off the line under pressure, but Shrewsbury did draw level in added time through defender Will Boyle.
