Clarets goalkeeper Nick Pope speaks after a narrow defeat at Spurs and looks ahead to Thursday’s game against Aston Villa
Pope on the performance at Spurs:
“Our performance level was really good, they’re a top four team and we’ve defended really well. In terms of the game plan, it was something a bit different for us and something that the lads took on so well.
“It’s never easy to do it at this point in the season but credit to the staff for that and to the players for taking it on at such a high level. We created our own chances but we’re just disappointed with the goal and everything surrounding that.”
Pope on adapting the game plan:
“If you look at that game, you’d have to say that it was the right thing to do, the right decision. Players are out injured and are playing in different positions so it’s credit to them.
“It just says spades about the characters in the dressing room. It’s all about whatever’s best for the team, there’s no complaints from anyone.”
Pope on making some big saves:
“You’re always ready for it going to the big grounds away from home against a decent team. You’ve always got to be prepared to chip in a little bit. It’s nice to make a few saves while we stayed in the game and then potentially could’ve got something out of it.”
Pope on the squad:
“Something that’s massive about our dressing room is the characters in it.
“Everyone’s pulling in the same direction whether you’re in the team or out of the team and everyone wants the best for the football club, that’s something that has stood us in good stead in the past.
“It’s something that will be important for us over the next week. We’ve come here and deserved more.”
Pope on focusing now on Villa:
“Everyone in the dressing room is obviously disappointed today but there are a lot of positives to take. Carrying them forward to the Villa game has got to be the focus for us now.
“We’ve got to go down there, put together a new game plan and hopefully get on the right end of the result.”
