Burnley’s Nick Pope has been included in Gareth Southgate’s England squad for the forthcoming World Cup qualifying games against Hungary, Andorra and Poland.
The Cambridgeshire-born goalkeeper missed out on this summer’s European Championship finals because of knee surgery. He made his return to the Burnley side for the Premier League games against Brighton and Hove Albion and Liverpool.
Pope has seven caps and made his last appearance at Wembley against Poland in March 2021. England won that game 2-1. Jakub Moder scored for the Poles – that was the first goal conceded by Pope in international football.
With three games in seven days, Southgate is likely to utilise his squad.
England face Hungary in Budapest next Thursday at 7.45pm. They entertain Andorra at Wembley on Sunday 5th September (5pm) before travelling to Warsaw on Wednesday 8th September (7.45pm).
New signing Nathan Collins has received his first call up for the Republic of Ireland. He is part of a 25-man squad for their internationals against Portugal (away), Azerbaijan and Serbia (both at home)
Johann Berg Gudmundsson has also been included in Iceland’s squad for their home World Cup qualifying games against Romania, North Macedonia and Germany. He last played for his country in the 4-1 win in Liechtenstein in March 2021.
Burnley will have three goalkeepers away on international duty next month.
Carabao Cup hero Wayne Hennessey will be looking to add to his record tally of 96 Wales caps.
Bailey Peacock-Farrell is enjoying a productive loan spell at Sheffield Wednesday. He has been included in the latest Northern Ireland squad for next month’s internationals.
Meanwhile, striker Matej Vydra will also be on international duty after being included in the Czech Republic squad to face Belarus and Belgium in World Cup qualifiers and Ukraine in a friendly.
