The Welsh international stopper saved from Allan Saint-Maximin and Miguel Almiron in the shoot-out to help the Clarets get through to the third round of the Carabao Cup where Burnley will face Rochdale in a home tie.
Hennessey was delighted. “They were both to the right. Obviously, Saint-Maximin was the first one. I managed to get a good hand on that. I thought our penalties were fantastic. Fair play.”
His heroics weren’t just restricted to the exciting finale. Hennessey produced fine second-half saves to deny ex-Claret Jeff Hendrick and Javier Manquillo.
“We came under a little bit of pressure. I made a couple of saves – that’s what I’m there for. I thought the lads did really well tonight.”

Charlie Taylor hasn’t scored for Burnley in his 120 appearances for the club. An unlikely hero, he converted the winning penalty to kick-start wild celebrations.
“Fantastic. I congratulate him.
“Unfortunately, I’ve got the side angle, so I can’t personally see how good a penalty it was. If that’s his first goal for Burnley, fantastic!”
The giant keeper reflected on a distinct contrast to his last shoot-out when Crystal Palace lost 11-10 on penalties to AFC Bournemouth in last season’s Carabao Cup competition. In a bizarre conclusion, after all 20 outfield players had scored, both Hennessey and Asmir Begovic missed from 12 yards.
“I rocketed one over the bar, it went over the stadium. I think, I took a goal kick on that one! My last penalty shoot-out wasn’t great, so to finish like I did today I’m really happy with myself.”

“It’s my best debut by a clear mile.
I have to congratulate everyone in that dressing room. All the staff, the players, everyone has made me welcome. Every single person at the training ground.”
The former Crystal Palace man also thanked the Burnley fans who were high up in the Leazes Stand behind his goal.
“I thought they were fantastic today. Thanks for coming to watch us. We needed them. Every single player in that dressing room could hear them. Great credit to them.”
Away from Turf Moor, Hennessey, 34, still wants to add to his tally of 96 caps for Wales.
