Visit supports club’s ‘Clarets One Small Act’ Christmas pledge
Burnley FC players Chris Wood, Ashley Westwood, Jack Cork, and Will Norris continued the club’s annual tradition of delivering Christmas presents to patients at Burnley General Teaching Hospital and Royal Blackburn Hospital this week, with the aim of spreading Christmas cheer this festive season.
Unlike previous years in which the first team squad have visited the wards, in line with Covid-19 guidelines, the players donated and delivered the presents to staff at both hospitals outside.
Talking to staff on the day, the players hoped the presents would bring smiles to the faces of those facing a difficult Christmas in hospital this year.
Jack Cork said: “The team and I come to this hospital every year and try and make, for the people staying in hospital that year, things a little bit happier.
“Obviously, it’s different this year with Covid and unfortunately, we haven’t been able to do it in the same way this time, but we’ve contributed as a group, with some gifts to try and make it a little bit easier for people in hospital.”
“It’s nice to do something around Christmas, especially for people in and around Burnley. As a club we try to do a lot in the community and it’s nice to do. It’s only two minutes from the training ground so it’s nothing for us to try and make a difference to kids at Christmas and hopefully they appreciate the gifts.”
Denise Gee, Charity Manager for East Lancashire Hospital Charity, ELHT&Me said: “We’re absolutely delighted that the players have visited both our Burnley department and Blackburn, to deliver presents ready for Christmas.
“This makes a huge difference to patients, it’s not a time that you want to be in hospital and by the nurses being able to put the presents out on Christmas Eve ready for Christmas morning, lots of little faces will be lighting up. It’ll bring a lot of joy and we’re delighted that Burnley Football Club, year after year support us in this way, it makes a big difference.”
East Lancashire Hospitals NHS Trust (ELHT) was established in 2003 and is a large integrated health care organisation providing high quality acute secondary healthcare for the people of East Lancashire and Blackburn with Darwen.
The trust has 240 beds at Burnley General Teaching Hospital and 709 beds at Royal Blackburn Teaching Hospital, treating patients for the most serious of emergencies to planned operations and procedures.
The players and Burnley Football Club are proud to support the trust by delivering presents annually and acknowledge the hard work and efforts of all staff and volunteers at both hospital sites.
