U18s manager Tony Philliskirk has reminded his side that games are won in ‘both boxes’ and wants them to take that into their game with QPR next Saturday – 1st April.
The Clarets were beaten 4-0 at idVerde Training Ground by a Peterborough side who are now on an 11-game winning run in all competitions and sit 2nd in the Northern Section of the U18s Professional Development League.
Following the defeat, Philliskirk alluded to his sides slow start as to where they lost the game.
“I think we’ve got to be honest; we lost the game in the first 15 minutes as we were 3-0 down and started the game really slowly.
“The silly thing is, it should have been 3-2 at half time and before they get the fourth goal in injury time, we’ve missed two or three good chances, so we could’ve been level in the game.
“I’ve just had a chat with the lads at the end of the game to tell them that in football sometimes it’s not about the nice play, you have to show resilience and determination not to concede. And the same goes for scoring as well as we talk about both boxes a lot.
“What goes on in both boxes decides the game, and that showed today.”
Philliskirk also admitted to the fact his team were stretched due to injury and illness, but did not want to use that as an excuse for the result.
Jack Rogers and Ollie Sweeney both missed the game due to illness, leaving the Clarets with two outfield substitutes on the bench.
“We changed the system to something totally new today and threw it onto the players and we lost two players before the game through illness, and we only had two subs.
“We had our striker, Ryan Tioffo, playing right-back because we had no defenders so ultimately, we were putting square pegs in round holes.
“I’m not looking to make excuses as that doesn’t take away from the fact, we conceded sloppy goals from crosses and from set-pieces and we’ve got to be better in both boxes.
“We had great opportunities at the other end and didn’t take them so all in all you’ve got to say the best team won and we’ve got to be better than that and that’s the honest truth.”
Burnley now return to action in the PDL next Saturday afternoon – 1st April – against QPR at the Burnley Training Centre (11am KO).
