Monday 15th to Sunday 21st May is Mental Health Awareness Week and Burnley FC are taking the opportunity to increase mental health awareness and reduce the stigma around mental illness in our community.
Mental health is to do with how we think, feel and behave, and it is something that we all share.
To maintain good mental health, we can all think about our lifestyles. This would include working on sleep, diet, activities (including exercise), communication, friendships and relationships.
While mental health is a positive trait that we can all work on, when we cannot maintain our mental health, we may develop mental illness. Mental illnesses are common but very treatable; 1 in 4 of us will experience a mental illness in our lifetimes. These can include common conditions such as depression and anxiety. A wide range of effective treatments are available including talking-therapies, exercise, medications and community support.
For Mental Health Awareness Week 2023, our theme is anxiety. Anxiety is a common emotion that we have all likely experienced at some point in our lives.
Over the last season, with the ups and downs of football, we have all experienced some anxiety at different times. However, some people may experience more complex or severe forms of anxiety such as:
• Generalised anxiety disorder
• Phobias
• Panic attacks
• Obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD)
• Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)
At Burnley Football Club, we value mental health and offer services to support our players, coaches, and support staff.  This season Burnley FC have recruited a mental health team, comprising of:
• Dr Allan Johnston, Head of Mental Health - Dr Johnston is a sports psychiatrist, a doctor of mental health. He provides one to one mental health and performance support to the players, coaches and staff in the first team. A psychiatrist provides a range of biological, psychological and social treatment strategies including medications and therapies.

Mental Health & Emotional Wellbeing Strategy
Burnley Football Club are proud to announce that we have recently launched a Mental Health & Emotional Wellbeing Strategy, across the organisation encompassing both the Club and community.
We recognise the benefits of having a strong mental and emotional wellbeing programme in place, as it is important to us that our staff, coaches, players and participants of all ages feel valued and supported.
As an organisation, we understand we have an important role in breaking down barriers, inequalities and supporting positive mental and emotional health messages to everybody who engages with us. So, supporting our workforce has a positive knock-on effect on the help and support we give to our players, participants and wider community. Our vision is to create a culture and build awareness, where we actively protect and promote positive good physical, mental and emotional health for everyone.
