Burnley returned to Lancashire with a point and a clean sheet following Thursday night’s 0-0 draw with West Bromwich Albion at the Hawthorns.
The Clarets had chances to score through Jeremy Sarmiento, Lucas Pires and Josh Cullen, with Jaidon Anthony finding the back of the net with a header in the second-half, but was ruled out for an alleged foul in the build-up.
Head Coach Scott Parker made three changes from the side that played at Millwall, as Jeremy Sarmiento, Zian Flemming and Lucas Pires all came into the XI for Josh Laurent, Bashir Humphreys and Andreas Hountondji.
There was an early chance for the hosts with only a few minutes on the clock when a cross fell kindly to John Swift unmarked in the area, but the former Reading man could only guide it well over the target from inside the area.
Burnley responded to that chance in the 10th minute with one of their own, as Flemming flicked on James Trafford’s long-ball, with Anthony breaking onto the end of it and forcing a corner as his effort towards goal was blocked.
Both sides were pushing to break the deadlock and next up was Albion’s turn, as a Darnell Furlong long throw was eventually guided wide by the head of Mason Holgate, following a scramble inside the box.
It was a lively start, as the Clarets forced another corner, but after Pires picked it up on the edge of the area, the Brazilian full-back could only fire wide of the post just before the midway mark of the first-half.
The best chance so far then came to Sarmiento, as the Ecuadorian winger was played in on goal one-on-one with Alex Palmer, but the Baggies keeper was there to deny the former West Brom loanee the opening goal with his foot.
CJ Egan-Riley, starting his 10th league game this season, then made two vital blocks inside the area. First to deny Callum Styles’ effort, before then keeping out Karlan Grant a couple of minutes later.
Styles then had another attempt on goal shortly after, but the former Barnsley midfielder could only fire over the crossbar.
It was an end-to-end first-half, as Jaidon Anthony won Burnley’s sixth corner of the night, after the winger cut inside from the right and saw his cross blocked, with the half-time whistle following moments later.
Following a quiet 10 minutes in the opening stages of the second-half, the Clarets then looked to have broken the deadlock when Anthony headed home Pires’ cross at the back-post, but referee Tom Nield ruled the goal out with an alleged ‘push’ on Styles in the lead-up to the goal.
The Clarets were on the front foot and had another opportunity to take the lead, as Pires lifted the ball past Holgate, before rattling the outside of the post, with Palmer left stranded between the sticks as the shot-stopper could only watch on.

Burnley's first change of the night came in the 75th minute, as Sarmiento was replaced by Josh Laurent, as Parker looked to try and clinch a winner.
That winner came close five minutes later, as Cullen met and flicked on Anthony's corner, but sailed just wide of the post.
Despite an attacking display from the visitors and efforts to steal a late goal, the Baggies' defence ensured the points were shared in the Midlands.
