Burnley suffered their first defeat of the 2024/25 campaign with a 1-0 loss at the Stadium of Light to Sunderland on Saturday.
Romaine Mundle’s 26th minute strike proved to be the difference between the two sides in the North East.
Head Coach Scott Parker named four changes to the side that beat Cardiff City as CJ Egan-Riley, James Trafford, Han-Noah Massengo and Andreas Hountondji came in for Dara O’Shea, Vaclav Hladky, Luca Koleosho and Josh Cullen.
There was an early opportunity for the hosts as Dennis Cirkin broke down the left, before playing the ball into the path of Romaine Mundle to cut it back for Chris Rigg, who fired inches wide of the post from close range.
Sunderland had the momentum behind them in the opening stages of the game and had another chance with 13 minutes played, when the ball fell kindly to Patrick Roberts at the back post, but the forward’s effort was blocked before being cleared.
Midway through the first half, the Black Cats had their opener as Roberts picked out Mundle inside the area, who finished past Trafford to give the hosts the lead.
Chances were minimal for the Clarets in the opening 45 minutes and with half-time approaching, Vitinho looked to pick out Hountondji inside the box, but the Benin striker could only head wide of the target and the effort was eventually flagged for offside.
The hour mark saw Parker make his first change of the afternoon as Zeki Amdouni replaced Massengo with the Clarets looking to claw an equaliser in the North East.
With 20 minutes to play, Hountondji then tried his luck from distance with a strike that skimmed wide of the target, before Parker made a second change with Shurandy Sambo coming on for Vitinho.
Sunderland had a chance to double their lead shortly after that, when Cirkin rifled an effort from the edge of the area towards goal but Trafford was equal to it.
Despite the Clarets' efforts to grab an equaliser, the hosts held on to secure three points and ensure Burnley's first defeat of the campaign.
