Burnley were well beaten on Wearside on Monday night, losing 3-0 at Sunderland in the Premier League.

Habib Diarra's first half double put the hosts in the ascendancy at the break.

His first, on nine minutes, arrived via the aid of an Axel Tuanzebe deflection, before the same player made it two soon after the half hour mark, firing home from 12-yards out.

Chemsdine Talbi then put the game beyond any doubt 20 minutes from time, sending an unstoppable shot in off the underside of the bar to make it three.

Scott Parker made one change to his starting XI following the 2-2 draw against Tottenham Hotspur last weekend - Lyle Foster returning at the expense of Armando Broja.

After an even opening on a cold, wet and windy night at the Stadium of Light, Burnley trailed inside nine minutes.

Brian Bobbey and Diarra combined, before the latter’s goal-bound shot was deflected off Tuanzebe, sending Martin Dúbravka the wrong way.

The goal stunned the visitors, but as the half reached its midway stage, Parker’s side began to settle.

Chances remained at a premium though for the Clarets, with Sunderland continuing to pose the greater attacking threat.

Indeed, it was the hosts who doubled their lead shortly after the half hour mark, Diarra finishing from 12-yards out after Nordi Mukiele made the most of the time and space gifted to him down the Sunderland right hand side, sending in a cross that Diarra buried at the second attempt.

The rest of the half ebbed and flowed, but in truth, Sunderland seemed happy to keep possession for sustained periods, seemingly content with their comfortable 2-0 lead at the break.

Parker made a change at half-time, introducing Josh Laurent at the expense of Tuanzebe.

Burnley started the second period in improved fashion, seeing plenty of the ball, but there were no chances to report for the visitors in that spell.

Armando Broja and Zian Flemming entered the fray soon after the hour mark, but the next chance of the match arrived at the other end, with Dúbravka producing a smart save to deny Brobbey.

Soon after, Flemming let fly from range, but his shot finished well wide of the target, as frustrations began to creep in.

Bad turned to worse on 70 minutes, when Talbi put the visitors three goals to the good with a contender for goal of the season, letting fly from fully 25-yards and firing a blockbuster of a strike, which cannoned in off the underside of the crossbar.
