Clarets fall to defeat at St James' Park

Despite a promising and bright start from the Clarets and a resilient second-half, two first-half goals for Newcastle proved to be the difference in a narrow defeat for Burnley at St James' Park.

Bruno Guimarães found the back of the net directly from a corner just after the half-hour mark to give the home side the lead, before Anthony Gordon doubled United's advantage from the penalty spot in stoppage time of the first-half, moments after Burnley were reduced to 10 men following Lucas Pires' red card.

A dramatic ending was then set-up, as Zian Flemming bagged his fifth goal of the campaign deep into stoppage time from the penalty spot following a handball, before the last kick of the game saw a dangerous cross into the area narrowly miss the head of Flemming and fizz wide.

Head Coach Scott Parker made four changes from the side that played Crystal Palace on Wednesday night.

Armando Broja, Lesley Ugochukwu, Jacob Bruun Larsen and Pires all came into the XI, which saw Flemming, Loum Tchaouna, Jaidon Anthony and Quilindschy Hartman make way.

It was Broja’s first start for the Clarets in the Premier League, with Pires making his top-flight debut. Meanwhile, Mike Trésor was named on the bench for the first time this campaign in the league.

The Clarets started brightly on a crisp afternoon in the North East, winning a couple of early corners and looking to apply pressure towards the United backline.

Burnley were pushing for an early opener and Lyle Foster was next to try his luck for the visitors, but the South African striker’s effort sailed over the target from outside the area.

United responded to the Clarets’ promising start with an opportunity of their own, as Jacob Ramsey teed up Nick Woltemade inside the box, but the German forward saw his effort blocked by the legs of Maxime Estève.

But Parker’s men were straight back up the other end with another attack, as Pires whipped in a teasing ball aiming for Ugochukwu, but the towering Dan Burn was there to clear away, whilst picking up a knock in the process.

With the Clarets continuing their impressive opening to the game, an inswinging Pires corner then caused Aaron Ramsdale a scare, with the goalkeeper punching the ball onto his own crossbar in an attempted clearance.

United were looking to get a foothold in the game and skipper Guimarães was next up to try and break the deadlock, but the midfielder’s strike was caught comfortably by Martin Dúbravka.

After a spell of possession, the hosts were breaking into the final third and came inches close to bagging the opener, only for Gordon’s strike to clip the outside of the post.

However, Newcastle’s spell of pressure eventually paid off on the half-hour mark, as Guimarães' corner found the back of the net direct from the set-piece, looping over the head of Dúbravka.

As half-time approached, Burnley’s afternoon then got a whole lot tougher when Pires was shown a straight red card in the 43rd minute for a collision with Anthony Elanga, with the forward breaking through on goal.

Deep into stoppage time of the first-half, United managed to grab their second goal, as Ugochukwu was adjudged to have handled inside the area from a cross, with referee Stuart Attwell pointing to the spot following a VAR check, which Gordon stepped up and slammed home in what proved to be the final moment of the first 45.

With the Clarets trailing at the break and a man down, Parker made a change which saw Joe Worrall replace Foster.

After a quiet opening 15 minutes to the second-half, United came close to a third of the afternoon when Guimarães' stinging effort was palmed over the crossbar by the hand of Dúbravka.

Parker turned to his bench once again with just over 20 minutes left on the clock, as Josh Laurent replaced Florentino, as the visitors looked to spark a comeback.

However, it was Newcastle who came narrowly close once again, but this time Gordon's looping strike from outside the area rattled the outside of the crossbar.

There was a late chance for Elanga, who saw his curling effort from 25-yards out sail just wide of the post, with that chance looking like it might have been the final opportunity of the game.

However, a Jacob Ramsey handball inside the box in the 90th minute saw the referee point to the spot, with Flemming stepping up and firing into the bottom corner past Ramsdale to tee up a nervy ending for the hosts.

And there was chance for one final opportunity and it fell Burnley's way, as substitute Marcus Edwards saw his perfectly-delivered cross narrowly miss Flemming, before sailing past the bodies of Laurent and Anthony, with the full time whistle blown just seconds later.
