Despite another solid showing and battling display from Scott Parker’s side in the Premier League, two goals in quick succession in the second-half just about put the game against Manchester City out of reach for the Clarets, despite being level at the break.

City took the lead through a Maxime Estève own goal in the first-half, before Jaidon Anthony equalised with his fourth goal of the campaign after firing in from Quilindschy Hartman’s cross.

With the scores level at half-time, the hosts then struck twice in five minutes just after the hour mark, with Matheus Nunes putting City ahead, before Nunes’ cross into the area aiming for Oscar Bobb was deflected into the back of the net by Estève.

Striker Erling Haaland then fired home twice in the final few minutes to put the game out of sight.

Head Coach Scott Parker named an unchanged side from the team that drew with Nottingham Forest, with Lesley Ugochukwu returning to the bench following his suspension last weekend.

The hosts started brightly and enjoyed spells of possession in the opening 10 minutes, with Nico O’Reilly’s goal-bound shot being deflected wide for a corner from the legs of Hjalmar Ekdal.

However, City did break the deadlock with 11 minutes played, when Jeremy Doku weaved into the area and fired at Martin Dúbravka, who initially parried the effort away, but Estève could only turn the ball into his own goal in an attempt to clear.

City came close to a second goal of the game 10 minutes later, as Doku forced Dúbravka into a smart stop from inside the box, before Nico González's follow-up took a deflection just wide of the post and out for a corner.

Despite the home side dominating the opening half an hour, Burnley did begin to come into the game and looked for opportunities to try and unlock the City defence.

And with just over 10 minutes left until half-time, that’s exactly what the Clarets did, as Hartman zipped in a pass across the area from out on the left, for Anthony to steer home with a first-time finish into the bottom corner to draw the scores level.

As half-time approached, the Clarets did have one final chance, but Lyle Foster’s acrobatic effort fizzed wide of the post, with Rob Jones’ half-time whistle following shortly after that.

Burnley started the second-half where they left off from the first, with Hartman having an opportunity of his own, but Gianluigi Donnarumma was there to palm away the full-back’s stinging effort.

City responded to that chance with one of their own just before the hour mark, but Tijjani Reijnders fired well over the target from the edge of the area.

However, the hosts did grab their second of the afternoon, as a cross into the area found Haaland at the back-post, with the striker heading the ball down into the path of Matheus Nunes to slam home from close range.

Parker then made his first change of the game shortly after that, with Jacob Bruun Larsen replacing Loum Tchaouna.

It was City who struck again though just a few minutes later, as Estève looked to block the incoming cross aiming for the lurking Oscar Bobb, but the centre-back narrowly turned it into his own goal.

With the game approaching the final 10 minutes, Parker made further changes with Ugochukwu and Broja replacing Cullen and Foster.

The match looked to be drawing to a close with the hosts 3-1 ahead, until a quickfire double from Haaland in stoppage time added salt to the wounds, in a game it would be fair to say didn't reflect the scoreline.

Burnley's attention now turns towards next Sunday's trip to Villa Park.
