Clarets fall to defeat on Merseyside

Burnley's first visit to the Hill Dickinson Stadium ended in defeat on Tuesday evening.

A goal in each half from former Claret James Tarkowski and player-of-the-match Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall condemned the Clarets to a 2-0 loss on Merseyside.

In a game of few clear-cut chances, the hosts eased to victory, to leave Scott Parker's side in 19th place, eight points adrift of safety with nine Premier League fixtures to play.

On a mild March evening on Merseyside, Burnley crafted an early opening when Lyle Foster galloped clear of the Blues backline, only to scuff his low effort wide of Jordan Pickford’s right-hand post.

Everton responded with a flurry of corner kicks, but the half hour mark passed without either keeper being tested.

A drab first half eventually sprung into life in the 32nd minute when Tarkowski headed home James Garner’s free-kick to put the hosts in front from their first attack of the evening.

Buoyed by their goal, the Toffees created two late chances in the half – Dewsbury-Hall saw a powerful, low effort blocked by Maxime Estève, moments after Jarrad Branthwaite was denied by Martin Dúbravka.

The second half started as the first had ended, with the Toffees on top.

David Moyes’ side had the ball in the back of the net again on 55 minutes, but this time the assistant referee’s flag came to the rescue of the visitors, with Iliman Ndiaye adjudged to have been in an offside position from Idrissa Gueye’s pass.

Parker made his first substitutions of the night soon after – James Ward-Prowse and Loum Tchaouna entering the fray.

The changes failed to have the desired effect though, as the Toffees doubled their lead on the hour mark, with Dewsbury-Hall finish with aplomb from a cute Ndiaye pass.

Everton had their tails up, and Gueye nearly capped a fine individual display with a goal, only to see his long-range effort cannon back off the woodwork.

Jaidon Anthony tried his luck from distance on 79 minutes, before Foster saw his effort expertly saved by Pickford from point-blank range - as the Clarets succumbed to a 2-0 defeat.
