Burnley ran rampant against Sheffield Wednesday on Friday night, with four goals to nil seeing the hosts extend their unbeaten run to 23 matches in exquisite fashion at Turf Moor.

Marcus Edwards’ first league goal just before half-time, Josh Brownhill’s 10th of the campaign, a flowing team moved finished by Connor Roberts and a trademark Manuel Benson stunner saw the Clarets blow away the Owls.

The Clarets added their 12th clean sheet in a row to a season of defensive mastery but the evening belonged to the attack, particularly in a thumping second-half performance.

Head Coach Scott Parker made two changes from the side that drew with Preston last weekend, as Edwards was handed his first start for the Club and Lucas Pires came in at left-back.

The first chance of the game went Wednesday’s way and it was a close call from a corner for the visitors, as Michael Ihiekwe’s effort just kissed the outside of the post and out for a goal kick.

Danny Rohl’s side then had a glorious opportunity with 16 minutes played as Djeidi Gassama’s cutback into the area found Stuart Armstrong, but the Scottish midfielder could only stroke it inches wide from yards out.

The Owls were on the front foot in the opening stages and had another chance, but Josh Windass’ close-range effort was deflected away for a corner superbly from the right foot of Maxime Esteve.

In a lively first-half, Burnley then went straight up the other end and clipped the top of James Beadle’s crossbar, as Edwards cut into the area from the right and chipped the ball onto the far corner of the goal.

Just as the game looked to be heading to half-time goalless, Edwards stepped-up with a magical moment after playing a neat one-two with Josh Cullen inside the box, the winger then placed it perfectly into the roof of the net past Beadle.

Wednesday came out swinging in the second half and forced the first corner of the half – Connor Roberts making an exceptional last-ditch block to take Windass’ strike over the target from close range.

Esteve then followed that block with an excellent one of his own, after the France U21 international denied Armstrong from turning home Windass’ pass, roaring in delight.

Parker made his first changes of the night on the hour mark, as Brownhill and Lyle Foster replaced Hannibal and Zian Flemming.

And what a change it turned out to be, as Jaidon Anthony raced down the right to the edge of the box before picking out Brownhill with a fizzing cross to steer it home with his first touch moments after coming onto the pitch.

Despite going ahead by two, James Trafford – who equalled the record for clean sheets in the Championship with another shutout – was called into action when he kept out both Shea Charles and Ihiekwe with smart saves.

The Clarets then added their third of the night and put the game out of reach, when Anthony teed up Roberts to guide it into the back of the net from inside the area after a great team move.

Further changes saw Benson introduced with five minutes to play and the winger was on hand to grab the fourth of the evening with a spectacular effort, cutting inside on his right foot and slamming into the top corner to put the game to bed.
