Burnley exited the Emirates FA Cup at the fourth round stage on Saturday afternoon, going down 2-1 to Mansfield Town at Turf Moor.

Josh Laurent's tidy first half goal was cancelled out by Rhys Oates' header early in the second period, before Mansfield captain Louis Reed slammed home a stunning 80th minute free-kick to send Nigel Clough's side into the round five.

On a freezing cold afternoon at Turf Moor, Burnley were on the front foot from the first whistle, carving open the Stags defence inside three minutes.

Quilindschy Hartman delivered a low ball into the box, but Ashley Barnes failed to apply the finishing touch, poking the ball wide from close range.

Mansfield, to their credit, improved as the half wore on, edging their way into the contest, without calling Max Weiss in the Burnley goal into action.

At the other end, Burnley continued to threaten – and they were rewarded with the opening goal of the game on 21 minutes.

Neat interplay on the edge of the penalty box ended with Lyle Foster finding Laurent, who expertly sat both his marker and the goalkeeper down, creating him with time and space to tap home from six yards out.

With their tails up, the Clarets went close again five minutes later, Foster forcing Liam Roberts into a routine stop by his right-hand post.

Soon after, Jacob Bruun Larsen saw his deft chip cleared off the line, before Loum Tchaouna thrashed high and wide with the goal at his mercy, as Parker’s men began to seize firm control of the contest, heading into the break with a one-goal advantage.

The one-way traffic continued at the start of the second period, with Tchaouna heading wide inside the opening minute of the half.

Mansfield wasted a golden opportunity to draw level on 49 minutes, when William Evans – having capitalised on Hjalmar Ekdal’s slip – fluffed his lines when one-on-one with Weiss, botching his effort over the bar.

The visitors weren’t to be denied though, equalising from their next attack. Kyle Knoyle’s cross found Oates at the back post, and the striker headed into the bottom corner to bring the tie level.

Parker made a double change midway through the half, introducing Hannibal and Marcus Edwards at the expense of Bruun Larsen and Tchaouna.

The next chance of note arrived the way of the visitors though, with Stephen Mclaughin forcing Weiss into a smart stop from distance.

Edwards looked lively upon entering the fray, firing in a low drive that Roberts did well to palm to safety.

But the all-important next goal of the tie went the way of the visitors ten minutes from time, Stags skipper Reed sending an unstoppable free-kick into the top corner from fully 25-yards out, to send the away end into pandemonium.

Substitute Zian Flemming squandered a fantastic chance to level matters late on, firing over from the edge of the six-yard box, and that proved to be that, as the Stags advanced to the last-16.
