Burnley's mini-revival ended with the cruellest of defeats at home to Brentford on Saturday afternoon in a seven-goal thriller, with the Clarets denied two goals by VAR.

After collecting four points from a possible six on the road from matches against Crystal Palace and Chelsea in recent weeks, Scott Parker's side succumbed to a last-gasp 4-3 loss to the Bees at Turf Moor, leaving them eight points adrift of safety with ten Premier League fixtures remaining this season.

Brentford led 3-1 at the break, thanks to goals from Mikkel Damsgaard, Igor Thiago and Kevin Schade put the visitors in the ascendancy, before Jaidon Anthony's shot deflected in off Michael Kayode on the stroke of half-time to give Burnley hope.

Anthony then pulled a second back two minutes into the second period, before Zian Flemming headed home an unstoppable header from an outrageous Hannibal cross to make it 3-3 on the hour mark.

The home side then thought they were in front through another Flemming strike, but VAR ruled out the goal for an adjudged offside in the build-up.

There was still time for a late twist in the tale, when Damsgaard bagged Brentford's fourth and the winning goal in the third minute of second half stoppage-time.

Burnley again then thought they had claimed something from the game deep into stoppage time, but Ashley Barnes' effort was disallowed for a handball, with the Bees walking away with the three points.

From the Bees kick-off, Burnley had a chance. Flemming intercepted Thiago’s pass from the centre spot, only for his shot to finish well wide of the right hand post.

Despite an even opening to the game, Brentford broke the deadlock on 10 minutes. Damsgaard met Dango Outtara’s corner at the back-post, with the midfielder heading home unmarked from close range.

Burnley looked to respond though and had an opportunity just a few minutes later, when Josh Laurent teed up Anthony on the edge of the box, but the winger’s effort flew wide.

The same duo linked up again just moment later, this time Anthony received Laurent’s pass, before firing into the hands of Hakon Valdimarsson.

Keith Andrews’ side then wasted a glorious opportunity to double their lead midway through the first-half, after a well-worked move saw Schade fire wide of the goal from 10-yards out, after latching on to Outtara’s fizzing ball across the face of goal.

However, the Bees did double their advantage just a minute after that chance, as Damsgaard turned provider and threaded a through ball in to Thiago, with the striker breaking into the area and finishing coolly past Martin Dubravka.

Things turned from bad to worse for Burnley ten minutes before the break, when Kayode's long throw was flicked on and cleared off the line by Lucas Pires, only for Schade to hammer home the rebound.

The Clarets were gifted a lifeline moments before the break, however, with Anthony’s close range strike taking a huge deflection off Kayode, to reduce the arrears on the stroke of half-time.

The Clarets were quick out the blocks in the second-half, as Hannibal tried his luck from just outside the box, but the midfielder’s effort fizzed just over the crossbar.

However, just a minute later, Burnley pulled another goal back, with Hannibal firing a ball into the area from the right, which reached Anthony at the back-post, who then calmly struck it into the bottom corner past Valdimarsson.

That goal gave the whole of Turf Moor a lift and the crowd responded, with all four stands roaring the team on to try and grab the equaliser - and that’s exactly what they got on the hour mark.

Hannibal drove towards the Bees defence, before drifting a delightful cross towards the back-post, for Flemming to meet and crash home a lovely header, leaving Valdimarsson stranded in the Brentford goal.

The Turf was rocking and Burnley weren’t looking to stop there, as half-time change Lesley Ugochukwu weaved into the area, but drilled a shot just wide of the upright, as the hosts pushed for a winning goal..

Flemming then thought he'd completed the comeback ten minutes from time, slamming into the net from close range, only for a lengthy VAR check to adjudge Anthony to have been in an offside position in an earlier phase.

And cruelly, it was Brentford who would have the final say of a topsy-turvy contest in stoppage-time, when Damsgaard broke Burnley hearts with a late winner.

Remarkably, the Clarets had the ball in the net themselves in the final seconds, but substitute Ashley Barnes was adjudged to have handled the ball and his sweet strike was ruled out, to leave Turf Moor deflated
