Clarets head to Deepdale in FA Cup fifth round

Burnley continue their Emirates FA Cup campaign on Saturday afternoon, as the Clarets take on Preston North End in the fifth round of the competition.

Scott Parker's side travel down the M65 to Preston in fine form having won 4-0 last time out, which extended Burnley's unbeaten run to 23 matches.

The Clarets sealed their place in round five following a win over Premier League opposition Southampton earlier this month, after defeating Reading in the third round in January.

Saturday's opponents North End booked their place in this weekend's fifth round with wins over Charlton Athletic and Wycombe Wanderers and the Lilywhites will be aiming to reach a first FA Cup Quarter-Final since 1966.

This will also be the first time in history that Burnley take on Preston in the FA Cup, with the two founding members of the Football League never coming up against each other before in this competition.

The trip to Deepdale is a complete sell-out and no tickets are available to buy anywhere online or at the ticket office.

The game is available to watch live in the UK on BBC iPlayer.

The opposition

Preston are competing in their 10th consecutive Championship season this year, following promotion back to the second tier in 2015 following a play-off final win over Swindon Town at Wembley.

Despite the Lilywhites finishing in the Championship play-off places three times across 2005-2009, North End were relegated to League One in 2011 following a 10-year absence from the third tier.

After two disappointing campaigns upon return to League One, Preston secured a play-off place once again in the 2013/14 season, but lost to eventual winners Rotherham United in the semi-finals over two legs.

However, promotion was sealed the following year when Preston were winners at Wembley against Swindon Town, as Jermaine Beckford’s hat-trick ensured the Lilywhites a spot back in the Championship.

A 7th place finish in the 2017/18 season is the highest since their return and 14th place the lowest, with many mid-table finishes in-between the last nine years.

North End will be looking to reach the FA Cup Quarter-Finals for the first time in the club's history since 1966.

"Look, we're looking forward to it. There's an opportunity there for us to reach an FA Cup Quarter-Final, but we know we are coming up against really good opposition.

"It's about continuing that momentum now and the main aim for us this weekend is going there, getting into the next round and progressing into the quarter-finals.

"We also know that they will be thinking the exact same and looking to reach the next round too, but the cup can bring special moments and that's what this competition brings, so we'll see where it takes us."
