Burnley suffered their first defeat since November on Saturday afternoon, as the Clarets were knocked out of the Emirates FA Cup in the fifth round.
Scott Parker’s side went into the break trailing to goals from Preston’s Robbie Brady and Milutin Osmajic, before Will Keane sealed the win for North End in the second-half.
Head Coach Scott Parker made nine changes from the side that played last time out against Sheffield Wednesday.
Vaclav Hladký came inbetween the sticks, with Oliver Sonne, Lucas Pires and Joe Worrall all coming into defence alongside Maxime Esteve.
Jonjo Shelvey partnered Josh Brownhill and Jeremy Sarmiento in midfield, with Manuel Benson, Luca Koleosho and Lyle Foster forming in attack.
Following a lively start on a crisp afternoon in Lancashire, the first effort on target fell North End’s way, when Brad Potts saw his volley denied comfortably by the hands of Hladký.
With neither side forcing any real clear-cut chances, the opening goal of the cup tie came on the half-hour mark, when former Claret Brady curled home a free-kick from the edge of the area into the top corner.
Despite the Clarets pushing to draw the scores level, with Luca Koleosho coming close from an effort that flashed just wide of the post, the hosts then doubled their advantage just before half-time through Osmajic’s strike from inside the area.
As the tie approached the hour mark and Burnley beginning to apply pressure on North End, Parker made a triple change with Shelvey, Koleosho and Benson making way for Zian Flemming, Ashley Barnes and Josh Laurent.
Flemming was straight into the action, after forcing Freddie Woodman to push his fierce strike wide for a corner.
Burnley then made further changes, with Jaydon Banel coming on for his debut alongside Marcus Edwards, with Sarmiento and Foster departing.
Despite the Clarets looking most likely to score the next goal, Keane then turned home from close range against the run of play to seal the win for the hosts.
Parker’s side’s attention now turns to Tuesday night, as the Clarets head to Wales to take on Cardiff City in the Sky Bet Championship.
