Clarets host the Blades in Easter Monday showdown

Burnley take on Sheffield United on Monday evening in their penultimate home game of the Sky Bet Championship season, knowing a victory would see Scott Parker's side secure an instant return to the Premier League.

The Clarets host the Blades in a clash at Turf Moor that sees 2nd take on 3rd and three points for the hosts would mean the Yorkshire visitors would be unable to achieve automatic promotion.

Parker's side head into the mouth-watering encounter 30 games unbeaten in the Championship with a five point gap ahead of United before Monday's fixture.

The Blades travel to Lancashire off the back of a 2-0 win over Cardiff City on Good Friday, which ended a run of three straight defeats.

The opposition

Founding members of the Premier League, United actually netted the first ever Premier League goal as Brian Deane scored the opener in a 2-1 victory over Manchester United.

The Blades were relegated in 1994 and United remained outside the top-flight for 12 years despite being Second Division play-off final runners up twice and reaching the play-off semi-finals.

United were promoted back to the Premier League in 2006 under the guidance of Neil Warnock after finishing 2nd, United lasted just one season though after being relegated on the final day.

Following just four seasons in the Championship, things got tougher as United then suffered relegation in 2011 to League One and would go on to spend six years in the third tier.

After five seasons in League One, with three failed play-off attempts, Chris Wilder arrived at Bramall Lane in 2016 in a bid to get the Blades back up and that's exactly what he did, as the former Blade guided the club to the League One title in his first season.

United were then back in the top-flight by 2019, as Wilder's side secured a second promotion in just three seasons, before the Covid-19 pandemic brought a halt to the Blades' first season back in the top tier, but the Yorkshire side secured an impressive 9th place finish following 'Project Restart' in the summer of 2020.

However, relegation followed the next season in 2021 and it took United two seasons to return to the Premier League, after securing 2nd place two years ago behind the Clarets.

Although the Blades were then relegated back to the Championship, they have had a strong 2024/25 campaign around the top of the table.

What Scott Parker said

"It’s a massive game for us, a massive game for everyone. Today (Friday) was a massive game too. We’ve had a mantra here and I’ve said it all the time that the focus is game-to-game.

"Today (Friday) was no different, there was no eyes on Mondays’ game. It was full focus on what we needed to do today as this is a division where you can slip up very, very easily which you’ll have seen over the course of it and with certain teams.

"We now have the next game which is Sheffield United which is a huge game for us. We’ll rest up and recover and we’ll go into this one the best way we can."
