Man of the Match Ian Maatsen says the backing of the Clarets support, partnered with the team’s belief, is what drove them to Wednesday night’s dramatic 3-2 win over Rotherham United.
The defender played his part as Vincent Kompany’s side made it 17 unbeaten in all competitions, and 16 in the league with four consecutive victories, via Halil Dervişoğlu’s 100th minute winner.
Post-match, 20-year-old Maatsen spoke to the media about the game, keeping belief, and sticking together with the Turf Moor faithful.
Maatsen on the madness of the evening:
“It was just a crazy game and a crazy night with a lot of energy. We kept believing and we scored in the last minute again.

“Turf Moor is crazy, I enjoyed it a lot and the fans were very loud. They gave us the power to keep going.
“Luckily we got the last-minute winner, but I think we deserved it. We had a bit of a slow start, but we kept going, were patient, kept the ball and kept playing, and it eventually paid off.
“I couldn’t be any happier now.”
Maatsen on perseverance paying off:
“We kept believing because we know we’re a good team, and we know that players can come on for us and change the game, so we’re really confident.
“We deserved the win, and it keeps the run going. Of course, you want to score first in these games, but we have to defend well.
“We’ll be looking at clips to improve, but the good thing is we had a great attitude [after falling behind]. We reacted well, and that’s why we have the three points now.”
Maatsen on a talented & united squad of players:
“You want to start every game, but if you come on then you have to give everything for us, and they did that tonight which is why we won. I’m glad we have players like that.
“We work hard for each other, and you can tell just from tonight how much we all believe in this team and our qualities.
“All the players like each other, give each other spirit, and keep believing in our own qualities.”
Maatsen on his Man of the Match against the Millers:
“I played well and worked hard for my team. It’s always nice to get the Man of the Match, but for me it’s about the team.
“If they didn’t perform, then I couldn’t get this trophy.”
Maatsen on taking it game by game:
“This game is over now, and we’ve celebrated, but tomorrow we will be back to recovery and the focus will go on to Sheffield United.
“That’s another good challenge for us and it’s now all about how we want to play. If we play well, then there’s nothing to worry about. It’s about us and not the teams who are coming up against us.
“The games are coming fast, so we have no time to waste. We have to recover well, watch clips to take the good bits and bad bits out of, and I’m really looking forward to the big games.
“They’re why you want to play football. You want to show yourself, show your quality, and we know we’re going to do well in these games if we play how we have been doing.”
