Ian Maatsen says that he is always proud to pull on a Netherlands shirt, but is now ready to get back to action with Burnley ahead of a trip to Cardiff City this weekend.
The full back played for his country’s U21 side, including against Anass Zaroury with Belgium, and sat down with the media at the Burnley Training Centre on Thursday afternoon to discuss his time as a Claret so far, his knowledge of the Championship, and preparing for the Bluebirds test.
Maatsen on facing Zaroury:
“We won, it’s always nice to have a little competition between each other, but it was nice to see him play for country.
“It’s always nice to represent your country and to wear their shirt, but I’m back here now and getting ready for another big game this weekend.”
Maatsen on his time at Burnley so far:
“I think it’s going quite well, we’ve got a low of new players, but we’re all getting on well and getting to know each other more. It’s just about time now but for myself, it’s going really well.”
Maatsen on a style of play which suits him:
“With the gaffer [Vincent Kompany], and assistant coaches here, it’s really good to have a team like this.
“We’ve got good players and have high standards with what we do on the ball. The way we train is the way we want to play in games.
“I think the players that came [in the summer] are to players, and we are a good team with a lot of quality in every position.
“My position [left wing back] is a good one for myself and my teammates. I feel comfortable in this role and can feel confident to get forward and help the team out where needed. The system is a good one.”
Maatsen on getting off to a good start with his goal at Huddersfield:
“You always want to impress in your first game, and for me I wanted to do that in a new chapter at Burnley. It was good to get that goal, and to build confidence. I knew then that we could make it even more special this season.”
Maatsen on the Championship:
“I’ve had quite a few loans, and they’ve helped me as a player as well as a person. I know this league, know the expectations of it, and know the pressure.
“It’s all about games, and we know that we need to recover well. We sleep well, eat well, and prepare for the next game.
“If a result isn’t the one that we wanted, then we have to bounce back quickly because there’s another opportunity in the week usually. We always have to be fully charged and ready to go.”
Maatsen on Cardiff:
“I played them before, last season, but I don’t know so much about them yet this year. We’ll be ready though, we’ll know the strong side of them and their weaknesses, as we do with every team.”
