16 Clarets players are currently out on season-long loan deals across nine leagues and three countries, including the Premier League, Vanarama National League North & Belgian Pro League.
That tally includes nine players from the academy here at the Club, with Sam Waller this week facing fellow loanee Dane McCullough and coming out on top. Wout Weghorst meanwhile featured for the Netherlands on the international front.
Here’s a round-up of how the second eight loanees, in alphabetical order, have fared with their Clubs over the last week. Make sure to look out for ‘Loan Watch: Part One’ to keep up to date with how the other eight fared.
Lukas Jensen (Accrington Stanley)
Jensen has been with the Clarets since 2019, and is currently trying to help Accrington survive relegation in Sky Bet League One.
The Danishman was suspended for Stanley’s 2-0 defeat at home against Plymouth Argyle on Tuesday night. He returned at Exeter City on Saturday, though the Reds lost out 5-0 with four of those goals coming in the second half.
They have no game this week with Saturday’s scheduled trip to Bolton Wanderers postponed with the Trotters at Wembley in the Papa John’s Trophy Final.
Luke McNally (Coventry City)
McNally, who joined Burnley last summer, didn’t have any matches during the international break with Coventry. He returns to action on Saturday as Stoke City visit the Coventry Building Society Arena.
This week’s game(s): SAT – Stoke City (H)
Matt Lowton (Huddersfield Town)
Also in the Sky Bet Championship, fellow defender Lowton – at Huddersfield – was another without any match action over the international break.
The Terriers host high-flying Middlesbrough this coming weekend with Lowton – who has been a Claret since 2015 – back in contention.
This week’s game(s): SAT – Middlesbrough (H)
Michael Mellon (Morecambe)
19-year-old striker Mellon also wasn’t involved in any match action over the course of the week just gone, currently on the sidelines with an injury.
Loan Club Morecambe did play, losing 1-0 at MK Dons. Talks remain ongoing regarding the frontman’s loan arrangement. He has been with Burnley since he was 15.
This week’s game(s): SAT – Barnsley (A)
Owen Dodgson (Rochdale)
Defender Dodgson’s efforts to help keep Dale in the Football League took a knock on Saturday as Jim Bentley’s side lost 2-0 at relegation rivals Crawley Town.
As he has done in all bar one of the games they’ve played since he joined in January, the full-back played the full 90 minutes at the People’s Pension Stadium. He has been a Claret since the summer of 2020.
This week’s game(s): SAT – AFC Wimbledon (A)
Sam Waller (Lancaster City)
Waller was one of two players featured in this section of Loan Watch to pick up a win with his loan Club over the last week, and it came on Saturday at the expense of Burnley teammate Dane McCullough.
The goalkeeper played his part as Lancaster beat McCullough’s Hyde United 2-1 at the Giant Axe, an upset in the Northern Premier League’s Premier Division on Non-League Day.
This week’s game(s): SAT – Warrington Rylands (A)
Will Norris (Peterborough United)
Fellow shot stopper Norris was the other loanee in this section to enjoy the taste of victory with loan Club Peterborough in Sky Bet League One.
Chasing down a top six spot, the Posh picked up a big three points at home against promotion rivals Derby County on Saturday. Norris kept a clean sheet in a 2-0 victory, and United are now within one point of the all-important play-off spots.
This week’s game(s): SAT – Oxford United (H)
Wout Weghorst (Manchester United)
Rounding off Loan Watch for this week is Weghorst who has been – and still is – on international duty with the Netherlands.
In Ronald Koeman’s first game in charge, ‘Oranje’ lost 4-0 in France on Friday night. Trailing 3-0 after just 21 minutes, Weghorst was introduced just after the half-hour mark at the Stade de France, but could do nothing to prevent the Dutchmen starting EURO 2024 Qualifying with a defeat.
The striker, who joined Burnley in January 2022, faces Gibraltar this evening before returning to loan Club Manchester United who are back in action at Newcastle on Sunday.
This week’s game(s): MON – Gibraltar (H – EURO 2024 Qualification) & SUN – Newcastle United (A)
