Winger reflects on his time in Scotland

Oluwaseun Adewumi only has positive things to say about his loan spell at Dundee, in which he was named the Club’s Young Player of the Season.

Affectionately known as Seun, the winger joined Burnley from Austrian side Floridsdorfer at the end of last summer’s transfer window and signed a four-year contract.

He then linked up with our strategic partner club Dundee, providing six goals and five assists in 37 appearances across the campaign.

“Off the pitch I’ve really tried to enjoy my time,” he said.

“I’ve been able to see Scotland and have been around Dundee, Edinburgh, and Glasgow.

“On the pitch I think I’ve really developed in possession, but especially out of possession.

“The quality here is better (than Austria) and you need to be focused on every detail and that’s really benefited my game.

“It was a huge step for me, especially as a 19-year-old - moving country and leaving family and friends.

“It was the right decision, though, because I grew a lot personally by living alone and doing stuff for myself.”

Adewumi’s Dee debut came as a half-time substitute against Ross County in mid-September and the 20-year-old was awarded his first start in front of 34,000 spectators at Rangers a week later.

It didn’t take long for the Austrian youth international to make an impact, netting his first goal in a narrow defeat to Kilmarnock at the start of October.

After his initial half-season loan deal was extended at the start of January, Adewumi enjoyed a purple patch that saw him score in back-to-back games against Rangers and Celtic.

Those two goals endeared him to the Dee supporters even more, and Adewumi is full of praise for the way they took to him during his time in Scotland.

“(The games) against the Old Firm was my best moment for sure. I still think about those two games now!” he said.

“Sometimes when I was in the city they’d come over to me and be really kind. It’s a good community here and I can only speak positively about the fans.”

As referenced in the latest episode of our documentary series Keeping the Faith, loans are a key part of any player’s development.

The fact that they are out of sight doesn’t mean they are out of mind, though, as Adewumi explained.

“I’ve been talking to Harry (Barnard – Technical Scout) and Paul Jenkins (Director of Football Development) throughout the season,” he continued.

“They always check up on me and ask me how I’m feeling, which is really good.

“With the experience I have I think I’m a better player now. I’m looking forward to continuing my development back at Burnley and hope to keep improving.”

Before returning to Lancashire the winger’s season has been extended, as he is currently involved with Austria U21s.

Having made his U19s debut in September 2024, Adewumi made his U21s bow in a European Championship qualifier against Bosnia & Herzegovina in September.

Peter Perchtold’s team are currently preparing to host Latvia in a friendly this evening, and later welcome Hungary to the Wiener Neustadt Arena on Tuesday 10th June.

“I’m young, healthy and enjoy playing – so it’s not an issue for me!” he said.

“It was an amazing feeling to play for Austria U21s, especially when I made my debut.

“I got an assist in that game and it’s always nice to help the squad, especially when it’s for your country.

“My brother, my mum, my sister and my friends are all proud of me and always try to support me, particularly off the pitch mentally.

“I feel like it’s really important to have a good environment as a football player, and my family and friends try to give me that.

“I’m looking forward to it (the friendlies) – seeing old teammates, having a good time and trying to improve.

“We have a new coach and players, so it’s nice to get to know everyone too.”
