Josh Laurent insists he was keen to 'learn' from Saturday's defeat to top-of-the-table Arsenal at Turf Moor.

The Clarets started positively, but two goals from the visitors in the first 45 made it a tough challenge against a quality Arsenal side. An improved second half performance however means Laurent and the side believe there's positives to take and plenty of things to learn from.

“It was a difficult game for us; we’re disappointed not to come out with anything. A lot to learn from, we showed a lot of fight and spirit at times. A lot watch over and improve on.

“I would say every game’s a learning curve for us, a chance to develop. We give respect to them, they're a good team and they showed why they're top of league, but we’ll continue in the right direction and keep competing.

“I think the first half we found it difficult to be aggressive how we wanted to be and sort of get up to them and get into more duels, win more duels, make it difficult for them – which is props to them.

“We had to fix it, and I think we did as a team. The coaching staff recognised that, gave us the information and we tried to be a bit more competitive and more front footed in the second half to try and take the game to them more, to try and get back in the game.

“It was a tough day. We’ll watch it over and keep improving as a team.”

Does Laurent feel that the team's ability to be flexible and recognise what needs to change is one of the ways the Clarets have shown progress so far this campaign?

“Of course. We’ve shown a lot of different faces to ourselves, that we can be flexible in changing shapes. Different types of games and also playing in different ways. We’ve seen us play in a real low block and we’ve also seen us at times be a bit more aggressive.

“We’re always developing, improving as a team, trying to get better. Learning from the coaches, learning together. I think we’re heading in the right direction. We’ve got to keep improving, keep being competitive, keep the spirit and the fight and bring it into every game.”

Scott Parker's men have a big game ahead next weekend against West Ham United and Laurent says the team will be heading into it feeling confident.

“It’s a massive game next week. We’ll learn from this, take what we need to improve on. Take those positives and we’ll go into next week still confident, with a fighting spirit and togetherness that we always have.

“We’ll debrief this, then get back to work ready for next week.”
