Vincent Kompany is expecting a tough test in the North East tomorrow when he and the Clarets take on Sunderland at the Stadium of Light.
The Burnley boss addressed the media on Friday afternoon, looking ahead to the challenge posed by the Black Cats and discussed how he manages a consistently busy fixture schedule.
Kompany on Sunderland:
“I guess [for them] it’s been a bit like everyone so far [this season] with ups and downs. It’s a totally different style than what we faced on Wednesday at Birmingham, and I think this could be a good game for the fans.
“They’re a bit hit on both sides of the coin, missing centre halves and missing centre forwards, but when you change your personnel, you usually don’t change your habits.
“For us, it’s to focus on what we’ve been able to see and ourselves as well, of course.”
Kompany on playing at the Stadium of Light:
“It’s good. I think there are a few players who are probably experiencing it (playing in front of big crowds) for the first time in their careers.
“As a player, you normally rise to these occasions, and I would like to think that most of our players just want to go out on the pitch on a day like that.”
Kompany on Vitinho’s flexibility:
“It’s a conscious choice we made to go for a player like him who has done it before in his career. He was a winger back in Brazil and then became a full back playing in Belgium on the left and the right.
“He’s never known anything different [than being flexible] and that’s why we’ve got him.
“He’s got goals from the left and the right [so far this season]. We can’t do it with every player, but with him it’s one of his unique qualities.”
Kompany on rotation with a busy schedule:
“We know we have players who have load issues or restriction issues, that was very clear at the start of the season along with which moments we might need to manage.
“When games turn around this quickly, the best thing is for us to delay our decisions until we’re 100% sure of where everyone is at.”
Kompany on a tight Championship:
“I’m not sure I’ve actually looked at the table since Wednesday. All I know is that we’ve got Sunderland now and then another game three days later, so between now and next Wednesday so much can happen. It’s just thinking game to game for us at the moment.”
