Manager Vincent Kompany was pleased with the character his side showed in the second half, as the Clarets came from a goal down to win 3-1 against Middlesbrough at Turf Moor
Duncan Watmore opened the scoring just four minutes into the second 45, before Manuel Benson’s brace and a Jonny Howson own goal sealed the win and moved Burnley eight points clear of third place in the Sky Bet Championship.
And Kompany praised the squad’s spirit and character to respond from going behind to go on and claim all three points on a wintery afternoon in Lancashire.
“Even if it was a slow first half, we played an outstanding second half and the team showed great spirit and character to not keep their heads down.
“I think we just lacked a little bit of sharpness, we just needed to be a little bit quicker and when there is time on the clock, I still always trust this group.
“Today was no different, they carried on and ultimately they played a good game and got the win we wanted.” Said the Clarets chief.
Benson played an unfortunate role in Boro’s opener, but the Belgian forward wasn’t disheartened for long, as the 25-year-old snatched a quick brace in just seven minutes to put Kompany’s men in front.
And post-match the Burnley boss admitted his delight for the wideman and spoke about the quick response from the Clarets’ joint-second top scorer.
Kompany joked: “Benny did well, he can definitely count an assist for the goal we conceded.”
“He reacted really well, like good players do. The first ball he got after that he just drove and ran at them and made something happen.
“The first goal, he takes on two defenders and puts it in the bottom corner, and I think he raised his hand to apologise for their goal.
“But we have young players in the group and these things can happen sometimes, but him and the team reacted well and kept going.”
And the boss hailed the support once again at Turf Moor, as a near-full house cheered the team on and over the line on a freezing day in Burnley before Christmas.
“I think the fans here know now they can trust these players to get themselves back into a game and it wasn’t through lack of effort.
“The supporters can trust this team to give everything they have until the last second of the game and again it worked today.”
