Clarets chief applauds grinding victory

Manager Vincent Kompany praised his side's patience against Coventry on Saturday, as the Clarets edged out the Sky Blues in a 1-0 win at Turf Moor.

The Clarets struggled to get into the usual attacking rhythm with the resilient City defence doing all they could to deny the hosts a seventh consecutive league win.

But Jordan Beyer's first senior goal and first for Burnley proved to be the winner on a challenging afternoon and Kompany was pleased with the way his side stuck to the plan to take home all three points.

Post-match, Kompany said: "The first half they were better than us, the second half i thought we were better and it was certainly a game of two halves.

"But I am pleased that we were able to get through it and come out on top and finish the game the way we wanted to.

"In the first half we didn't have enough threat, but we do know we're a team that can be patient and find the gaps at some point.

"I think they set up well and they have some really dangerous places who are a big threat going forward on the attack."

The Burnley boss added: "It was difficult throughout in the first half, but in the second half i felt we could have gone on and scored more than one.

"It was a really tough game for us, but we were patient and it paid off for us in the end and it's a great win for us today."

Beyer became the Clarets' 15th goal scorer this season with his 82nd minute header in front of the Jimmy McIlroy stand.

Kompany hailed the centre-back's all round performance against the Sky Blues and his enjoyment to finally see the ball hit the back of the net.

"Another scorer! We needed him today, we were building big chances in the second half and the later it got, you could just feel the goal coming.

"Coventry had to do some really good defending to keep us at bay and keep the scores level, but then we make the corner count.

"Benny had a chance, then Nathan has the header, it just felt like it was coming and in the end it did and to Jordan for his first goal, so we're pleased for him too.

"I also thought his all-round performance was great this afternoon at keeping their players away from goal and putting his body on the line."
