Boss Vincent Kompany admits he was left with mixed emotions following Burnley’s 2-2 draw with West Ham on Sunday afternoon.
The Clarets were 2-0 up at the break in London through David Fofana’s rocket and an own goal but second half strikes from Lucas Paqueta and Danny Ings ensured the points were shared on a wet and cold afternoon at the London Stadium
Speaking post-match, Kompany reflected on his team’s positive and promising performance and wants them to carry it into next weekend’s clash with Brentford.
“Definitely, mixed feelings. It was a game of duels, it was a game of fighting and it was about stopping crosses, heading crosses and then it was also a game where we had some really good periods.
“If I focus just on, not so much the manner but the timing of the two goals then that’s obviously two frustrating events. So shortly after half-time started and then at the end of the game.
“In the second-half, it was more about being dangerous despite having to defend more. With the chance at the end, you can tell we were still dangerous.
“Was the team alive? Yes. Did the team fight? Yes. I want to take that into the next game and nothing else.”
Kompany had high praise for Sunday’s opposition but was pleased with how his team coped with their attacking threat.
“We were playing against a good side. If Kudus decides he wants to take people on, it changes the game. If Paqueta wants to get on the ball, it changes the game. If Antonio gets played in behind and Bowen, we can’t ever have the arrogance to come to places like this and not realise they have players who can do that.
“Then it’s what you bring up against it and I thought if at the end we come away with a result, you would call it a fairly mature performance where in the first-half you’re at your best and in the second-half when they start going you hold on for a result, while still being dangerous.”
Fofana’s impressive opener was the Ivorian’s third goal of the season since joining from Chelsea on loan in January.
Kompany described the striker’s display as ‘outstanding’ and applauded his performance at the London Stadium.
The Clarets boss said: “It seems like he’s growing into the season and into the team as well.
“We will need performances like the performance he gave against West Ham. He was outstanding.
“The entire performance from Fofana was outstanding and we’ve needed it. Hopefully he can continue like that from now until the end of the season.
“These are the players who will help us.”
