In this article, the club in focus is Blackburn Rovers...
The Clarets' local rivals, East Lancastrian neighbours Blackburn were established in 1875, one of the 12 founding members of the Football League – alongside Burnley – three years later.
Successful in the top flight in their early years, Rovers were relegated from the First Division for the first time in 1936. After World War I had ended, they were again demoted in 1947/48, spending ten years as a Second Division club.
The 1970s saw Blackburn bounce between the Second and Third Divisions, before success came after Jack Walker’s takeover in 1991. Within four years, they went from a struggling Second Division side to Premier League winners.
Rovers recovered after relegation in 1999 to make it back to the top flight and win the League Cup in 2004. There was limited European success in the mid 2000s, but from then on, a slide began.
Last a Premier League outfit 10 years ago, our neighbours have gone on to spend time in League One and although back in the second tier, have struggled to maintain any promotion ambitions for a full season. After a failed Play-Off push last term, Tony Mowbray was relieved of his managerial duties.

Notable Connections: Former goalkeeper Adam Blacklaw is amongst those to have played for both clubs in the East Lancashire divide.
Joining Burnley’s ground staff as a schoolboy apprentice in 1954 directly from hometown Aberdeen in Scotland, Blacklaw earned a professional contract and went on to spend over 10 years as a Claret. He made 318 appearances for the club, winning the league in 1959/60. Joining our neighbours, he also made 96 appearances for them.
Midfielder David Jones also appeared for both clubs. Spending the 2012/13 campaign with Blackburn as a loanee from Wigan Athletic, he then moved to Turf Moor permanently in the summer of 2013. Jones won the Championship title in 2015/16 as a Claret, moving on Sheffield Wednesday - after 131 appearances – in 2016.
Last Time We Met: Unbeaten in our last seven outings against our neighbours, the Clarets have come out on top in all four of the most recent meetings.
In the league, Burnley completed the double in 2015/16 on our way to the Championship title, winning both games by 1-0 margins. Scott Arfield was the hero away from home, rifling in the winner, while Andre Gray hit the winner from the penalty spot at Turf Moor.
Meanwhile, in our most recent meeting, the Clarets reigned supreme in a League Cup tie at Ewood Park. Goals from Jack Cork and Robbie Brady saw us progress into the second round of the competition back in August 2017, maintaining local bragging rights in the process.
