Zian Flemming said he was taking the second Clarets goal against Sheffield United, despite some dialogue around who it came off, and was full of praise for his teammates for an impressive performance against the Blades at Bramall Lane.

When asked if the three points on Boxing Day were the perfect Christmas present the Dutchman said: “Yes, it couldn’t be any better I think, especially on Boxing Day, here at Sheffield United. It’s perfect. I think it’s a gift for us but also for the travelling fans.”

Chris Wilder's team were tough opposition with the Blades unbeaten in their last 11 league games. Does he feel that makes the win even more impressive?

“Definitely. Stats don’t lie, I literally just heard in the dressing room that this was the first goal that they’ve conceded since August at home. We didn’t know that at the start, at least I didn’t.

“Those stats don’t lie so I think it does make it more impressive.”

Josh Brownhill put the visitors ahead in the first half before Flemming's second half free-kick from the edge of the area took a deflection before looping into the back of the net. However, he is taking full credit for the goal!

“I thought it was mine to be honest! Obviously, it got deflected but I thought it was my goal and from what I’ve just seen on the stats they’ve given it to me so I assume it will stay like that!”

Against a Sheffield United side who had been in fantastic form on home soil this season, how much did he feel netting that second and giving the team a cushion helped?

“I think the second goal gives us much more confidence because you want to still keep a clean sheet, but you know that you’ve got a two-goal lead. Then on the flip side for them I think it’s a massive mental setback and for the people in the crowd because all of a sudden they’re looking at being two nil down. It’s a lot different when you go into the last ten or five minutes of the game when you’ve got a two goal lead. It’s just so much different than when it’s only one.”

Reflecting on the performance overall, the 26-year-old believes it wasn't just the Clarets on the ball work ethic that was note worthy but their endeavour off the ball too.

“I think in some ways it might have been quite similar to the Leeds performance earlier in the season. If you go to these top teams away from home, it’s unfortunately not going to be us with the ball dominating. We want that, we try to. However, I think if you look at us with the ball today, we wanted to be better, but we also know as a team that sometimes that’s not going to happen, and you have to be ready to dig in and be a very solid, organised team which is hard to beat, and I think we proved that again.”

Having spoken previously about how much he enjoys a busy Christmas period of back-to-back games, does he feel wins like today make it all worth it, the training on Christmas Day and maybe missing out on family time?

“Yes, definitely with a win! It feels like the atmosphere here is good but especially on Boxing Day you feel it that little bit extra. Maybe everyone’s in a good mood because they’ve just had Christmas! Our Christmases are a little bit different, but three points make it all worth it.”

And it's nice to send the travelling Clarets home happy on Boxing Day?

“100%, I hope they got some nice Christmas presents yesterday and hopefully this was the biggest one!”
