Young defender talks confidence boosting Bramall Lane win

Bashir Humphreys was thrilled with Burnley's well earned three points in the Boxing Day encounter with Sheffield United at Bramall Lane.

The 21-year-old who played a key role in the Clarets opening goal, sending in a lovely cross for Josh Brownhill to meet and head home, said he was happy that his work on crossing in the week paid off! And that the victory against such tough opposition has given the team valuable momentum heading into Sunday's trip to Middlesbrough.

“My emotions are all over the place. I think obviously we knew it was a massive, massive game for our season coming here. We weren’t putting everything on it because we know it’s a still a long season, it's only the halfway point. But we knew to come here and get points at Bramall Lane its huge.”

Sheffield United were unbeaten at Bramall Lane prior to the Clarets visit and hadn't conceded a goal at home since August. Did he feel that made it even more of a statement win?

“Yes, I think it just gives us confidence. We’re not too bothered about making statements to the league, or statements to anyone else, it’s only about making statements to ourselves and giving ourselves that confidence as a team which we’ve been building as the season’s been going on.”

And talking of confidence, Humphreys work on the training pitch practicing crossing paid off as he assisted Josh Brownhill for the first goal and the captain's ninth of the campaign.

“I’ve been playing a little bit out of position; I came here more as a centre back. I’ve been playing a little bit wider, so I’ve been working on my crossing this week and finally one’s gone in!”

Humphreys has featured 17 times for the Clarets in the Sky Bet Championship so far this season. Does he feel like he's growing and developing as a player game by game?

“100%, you get confidence from doing things over and over again. I think you get confidence from what we do in the week, and I get confidence from my teammates. I think this is one of the best groups I’ve ever been in, so positive, everyone is so welcoming, so kind, and we’re just pushing each other to do our best.”

And the faith and trust Head Coach Scott Parker puts into him helps as well?

“Definitely, playing different positions, it shows that he’s got that trust in me to go into any sort of position and do a job. As a player sometimes you don’t know what you’re capable of until you just try it, and you do it, from the Gaffer giving me that, it’s nice.”

The Boxing Day victory extended the Clarets' run to ten unbeaten now and Humphreys is keen to carry the positive momentum into the upcoming games.

“When you have momentum and you’re winning games you want the games to keep coming. You want to keep going and keep going so I think it’s great for us that we’ve got so many games in such a short period of time so we can keep on pushing.”
