Burnley Football Club are pleased to confirm the signing of Jessica Hennessy from FAWNL Southern Premier Division side AFC Bournemouth.
The defender has signed a one-year contract with the Clarets, making the long move north ahead of the team’s debut Barclays Women’s Super League 2 season.
Having put pen to paper, she said: “I’m extremely grateful.
“I think this is a brilliant club that I’m so lucky to be at, and I’m absolutely buzzing.
“Getting up to WSL2 was a goal for me, so to be here is massive for my career and the club’s overall goals align with mine.
“I give everything I’ve got. 100% all the time. I play with my heart on my sleeve for whoever I’m playing for and whoever I’m playing with.
“How passionate I am when I’m on the field is one of my biggest attributes, and I can be quite aggressive as well, which I think is a good thing.”
Hennessy was born and raised in the Republic of Ireland, learning her trade in the youth set ups at Mullingar Athletic, Lucan United, and Shelbourne.
She was snapped up by Shamrock Rovers in December 2022 and had an immediate impact, winning the Players’ Player of the Year award and being named in both the League of Ireland Premier Division team of the season and the first PFA of Ireland team of the year.
Those exploits earned the centre-back a move to Nottingham Forest, and after a year at the City Ground, she transferred to the Cherries last summer.
Now 24, Hennessy enjoyed another fruitful campaign last time out, starting all 22 of the south coast team’s 22 league matches as they narrowly missed out on a place in the tier three play-off.
Moreover, she helped the team win the FA Women’s National League Cup with a Player of the Match display in the final.
Hennessy now joins a defensive unit that was tier three’s best last year, joining the likes of Deanna Cooper and Jade Richards as central options.
