Johann Berg Gudmundsson thanked the Burnley fans for their ‘unbelievable’ send off following his final appearance in Claret on the final day of the 2023/24 Premier League season.
The midfielder was introduced as a half-time substitute during Sunday afternoon’s 2-1 defeat to Nottingham Forest at Turf Moor.
“The Club is a big part of mine and my family’s lives,” Gudmundsson said.
“I’ve been here for eight years, seven in the Premier League and another fantastic season in the Championship last year as well.
“It was emotional and difficult to say goodbye to the fans and the amazing friends that I’ve got to know over the years.
“The send-off was unbelievable; the fans have stuck with us through everything since I’ve been here and have been absolutely amazing.
“We wanted to finish the season in better fashion by staying in the league but unfortunately it wasn’t meant to be.”

With the Clarets 2-0 down at the break, manager Vincent Kompany introduced Gudmundsson in place of fellow winger Jacob Bruun Larsen.
“To get a few minutes was good,” Gudmundsson continued.
“The manager didn’t say anything to me in particular at half-time, with the messaging focused on the team tactically. I wasn’t expecting to come on then to be honest, it was his decision and I came on and tried to do my best.
“I was hoping to score but it wasn’t meant to be. I just wanted to enjoy every minute of being on the pitch, take it all in and try and get us back into the game.”
When the match had finished, Gudmundsson was joined by family members including his two children for the players’ lap of appreciation on the pitch.
That’s not uncommon for the Icelander, who can often be seen spending time with them on the Turf Moor pitch after games.
“Both of them have been born since I’ve been at Burnley, so the Club is all they know, and they support the team.
“They love coming to games and they probably don’t realise that this will be the last time for them today, so it’s a sad day for us all but I’m hopeful there’s another exciting challenge to come in the future.”
