Burnley’s training ground recently played host to Paralympian rowing hero Gregg Stevenson.
The Burnley fan was invited along to watch training and shared some time with the players, Head Coach and Chairman at Gawthorpe.
He brought along the gold medal he won earlier this month in the mixed double skulls at the 2024 Paralympics in Paris after the players had sent good luck messages to Gregg and his rowing partner, Lauren Rowles:
“The first thing I knew about it was when I saw good luck messages flash up on my phone. I was in the athletes’ village lying on one of the infamous cardboard beds and realised Burnley Football Club have tagged me [on Instagram]!
“It was unbelievable. You could feel it in the video that they were genuine messages. I was buzzing to get it! It was such a kind gesture and I think it made me feel the enormity of what I was about to do – which was really exciting.”
After setting a world’s best time in the heats, Gregg and Lauren came from behind in the last 500m to win an exciting final:
“It was an epic race. It was really close but because we always felt in control it was a great way to get it done.
“We went into the final as favourites after getting a world record in the heats but in the final, halfway down, I was thinking – are we going to do it? It was all about keeping cool.
“I spoke about that with some of the players and the manager, about making smart decisions when it really matters. I’m really proud to say we did that and, ultimately, we got a medal because of it.”
Look out for Gregg (and his gold medal) on the pitch before the game on Saturday!
He’ll be doing a Q&A then a lap of appreciation 15 minutes ahead of kick off against Portsmouth.
