31/03/2012 – Portsmouth 1 – 5 Burnley (Fratton Park)
Charlie Austin’s second half hat-trick, after goals from Kieran Trippier and Danny Ings gave the Clarets a much deserved three points on the South coast.
Trippier gave Burnley the lead, before David Norris equalised a few minutes later for the hosts, which saw the two sides head into the break level.
The visitors were back in front through Ings’ header just after half-time before substitute Austin added a third of the afternoon.
Austin then scored two goals in quick succession in the last few minutes to put the game out of reach.
The Clarets took the lead in the 16th minute with a training ground set-piece routine, as Dean Marney’s low corner fell to Trippier on the edge of the area to hammer home into the bottom corner.
Pompey responded with a clinical finish just three minutes later, when Luke Varney cut the ball back to Norris across the face of goal for the midfielder to smash into the roof of the net.
With the two sides level at the break, it was Burnley who regained their lead just after the restart as Ings headed home David Edgar’s cross.
Austin was introduced shortly after and got his first of the game when he turned the ball home from close range following a free-kick into the area.
An under-hit back pass from Jason Pearce in the 90th minute then gifted the Clarets and Austin another goal, as the striker nicked it and rounded Jamie Ashdown before slotting into an empty net.
That wasn’t it though, as the visitors added a fifth goal of the game when Josh McQuoid broke on the counter before squaring to Austin inside the box to fire in and seal his hat-trick and all three points.
