With four weeks exactly to go until the start of Burnley’s 2022/23 Championship season, the Clarets beat Rochdale 1-0 in their first pre-season workout.
Summer signing Scott Twine’s early goal proved the difference at Gawthorpe on what was his inaugural run out in Claret & Blue colours.
Boss Vincent Kompany opted to play the opening 45 minutes with a first-team 11, while U23s players contested the remainder of the game at the training ground.
First Half
Starting brightly, Dwight McNeil dinked a cross to the back post early on with Matt Lowton rising to meet the ball, but heading just over.
It didn’t take long for the breakthrough to come though, Lowton turning provider with a low cross into the area which Twine volleyed home from close range.
At the other end, Luke McNally then blocked a shot behind for a corner while Lowton also put his body in the way of a Dale effort which was heading the way of Will Norris in the Burnley goal.
Showing his attacking threat in abundance, Twine then saw a header kept out having got on the end of a cross from McNeil. The winger also tried his own luck, driving at goal and seeing a powerful strike deflect over the bar.
Rotating, Bobby Thomas replaced new signing Luke McNally with little over 10 minutes of the first half remaining, while Twine also saw another header go over the bar before the half was out.
The returning Johann Berg Gudmundsson provided the cross for Twine’s last attempt before the break, which saw both sides make 10 changes.
Second Half
Starting strong oncemore, Dara Costelloe burst forwards on 52 minutes and picked out Joe McGlynn in the box who had his shot sent behind via the outside of the post.
Visitors Rochdale never really had the opportunity to test either Norris or Sam Waller, who took the gloves over for the second 45 minutes. That was testament to the work done defensively, with centre back Thomas scrambling across the area to pressure a Dale forward into firing wide just after the hour-mark.
Cancelling each other out in what was a first workout of the summer for both, the main action in the final third of the game came through changes to personnel.
The visitors withdrew their one remaining starting player, a trialist, with 20 minutes remaining, while young defender Dan Sassi played out the final 10 minutes for the Clarets having replaced earlier substitute Thomas.
Owen Dodgson came close to a second with the very last kick of the game, cutting into the box and firing narrowly wide with a low drive, though it was to end 1—0 to Kompany’s side.
The Clarets are next in action a week tomorrow – Saturday, July 9 – away at Wolves in a behind closed-doors run-out.
