Many footballers cite going out on loan in the formative years of their professional careers as key to their development both on and off the pitch, and Lewis Forshaw is no different.
The goalkeeper spent much of the 2025/26 campaign with Worksop Town in the National League North, and his efforts were rewarded with the Tigers’ Young Player of the Year prize.
Having joined at the end of November he went on to keep 11 clean sheets in 30 appearances, in addition to winning two club Player of the Month Awards.
“I got the phone call off Ryan (Hudson – Head of Academy Goalkeeping), who said Worksop wanted to take me on loan,” Forshaw reflected.
“I had a think about it, and I agreed to do it.
“It was initially a one-month loan, which gradually increased month by month, and then I signed until the end of the season around March time.
“I felt like I needed to develop, especially with my age. I’ve got a lot of time to get more experience, and I just thought to myself, I need to get out there and try it.
“I’ve not looked back since!”
This move wasn’t Forshaw’s first taste of senior football, having had two spells at Lancaster City and another short-term move to Avro FC.
Given that he is still only 19, though, he admits a slight apprehension about settling into a new group of players and working with a new team of staff.
“I thought it was going to be tough, because I hadn’t met any of the lads at all,” Forshaw continued.
“It was just straight into the game on a Saturday, and the lads were very good to me at the start.
“They made me feel welcome and my debut couldn’t have gone any better, to be honest.
“I got Man of the Match and was named in the league’s team of the week, so I couldn’t have asked for a better debut.
“I feel like I’ve gradually got better every game, and that’s what you work hard every day in training for.
“I worked hard, and my reward came to me at the end. That recognition was nice.
“It (the loan move) has also matured me on and off the pitch, being in a changing room with men.
“It’s different to being with your mates and I feel like that’s helped me grow a lot as a person.”
With the season now finished, Forshaw and his U21s team-mates are enjoying some down time before they return for pre-season later this month.
Speaking on the final day before they broke up, Forshaw finished by looking ahead to the coming months.
“I’m looking forward to the break,” the shot stopper said.
“I’ve got two holidays in the summer, which will be good to have a rest and get ready to come back in pre-season.
“Next year will be a big one for me.
“I want to come back fit and better than I was last season.
“It would be great to be in and around the first team in pre-season if possible, and then hopefully go out on loan again properly somewhere else.
“I want to build up more experience – that’s my goal this year.”
