In 2023, Burnley Football Club will launch a past players initiative called Forever Clarets.
Over 1,300 male players have played for Burnley Football Club in its 140-year-old history, and we’d like to ask any past players to get in touch so we can keep them up to date with plans, ahead of the official launch. As the current home shirt takes inspiration from the Fourth Division Championship winning team, we’d be grateful if members of the 1991/92 squad got in touch.
More announcements will follow in the coming months as we build up to the official launch, which will take place at the Sunderland game on 1 April.
We are proud to announce that as part of the build up to the launch of Forever Clarets, former player Andy Payton will be in attendance at the Burnley v Reading game on Saturday 29th October.
Affectionately known as the ‘Padiham Predator’ Andy Payton was signed by Chris Waddle in 1998. His prowess in front of goal reaped benefits for the Clarets with a return of 81 goals in 176 league and cup appearances during his time at Turf Moor.
During the 1999/2000 League Division Two promotion season he cemented his place in history, when he won the ‘Golden Boot’ award for the division, with an eye watering 27 league goals.
He was the last player to score for the Clarets in the 20th century when he netted a hat-trick against Oxford United days before the new millennium. On scoring his 200th career goal against Wrexham in March 2000, Andy revealed a t-shirt that read ‘Natural born Claret’.
We’d be delighted to hear from all past players who should email Veronica Simpson on v.simpson@burnleyfc.com to get involved.
