Last week, Zian Flemming and Bashir Humphreys visited Burnley FC in the Community’s Turf Talk Group, a weekly meet-up of some of Burnley’s biggest fans who come together to talk all things Clarets.
The group was created by participants who previously attended other charity programmes, but realised they wanted to talk about one thing and one thing only - Burnley FC.
The group meet every Thursday at The Royal Dyche, welcoming a different guest each week, from Chief Operating Officer Matt Williams to former player and First Team coach Jack Cork.
Last week’s visit was part of the Premier League’s Inside Matters campaign, which aims to promote positive conversations around mental wellbeing, highlight community work, and support fans with their mental health.
The players spoke openly about everything from managing their wellbeing after matches to balancing personal life, including Bashir’s experience as a new dad, alongside their football commitments.
We also got a great insight into the Burnley FC Traitors game and the positive impact it had on team bonding and overall wellbeing.
Burnley FC in the Community’s Health and Wellbeing Co-ordinator, Martin Payne told us: “There’s just no group like Turf Talk! Their passion is off the charts, and we love putting on special visits like this for them. Zian and Bashir were so down to earth, and we really appreciated how open and honest they were with everyone. I’ve got no doubt our participants will be backing them even harder next time they’re out on the pitch.”
Bashir Humphreys added: “It’s nice to meet the people who are there at the games. I might be taking a throw in or making a tackle and they’re cheering me on. For me, it’s amazing to see them in another environment and speak to them as people, rather than as footballer and supporter.
“It’s really nice to meet them on a person-to-person level.”
