Burnley's U18s booked their place in the FA Youth Cup fourth round on Monday night with a dramatic penalty shoot-out victory over Birmingham City at Leyland.
In an end-to-end encounter, Zach Johnson found the opener for the Clarets in the first half before Frank Tattum secured the Blues the equaliser with ten minutes left on the clock which saw the game move to extra time.
City's Menzi Mazwi added a second onto the scoresheet for Birmingham in the second period of extra time, where Jack Rogers struck home with seconds to go to take the tie to a shoot-out.
Tony Philliskirk's side secured came out on top with a 4-3 win on penalties, which sees the side continue into the FA Youth Cup fourth round.
First Half
Johnson found the opener in the third minute of playing when Benji Wetshi took a strike at goal but Olly Sayer did well to guard the goal however Johnson found the rebound and tapped the ball into the bottom corner from close-range.
Lucas Wane tried his luck soon after, when he stormed down the wing and lost Zach Willis, when he entered the area he hammered the ball on target, but Sayer did well to punch the ball over the crossbar out of danger.
Ellis O'Shea attempted to find the equaliser for the away side in the 30th minute, as Tattum squared a quick ball near the far post, but O'Shea's powerful shot was caught by Lewis Forshaw.
Wetshi had the last chance in the first half as Johnson found him in an open space in the area, but when he fired the ball towards goal, Byron Pendleton managed to make a block, leaving the score 1-0 at the break.
Second Half
Burnley came back out on the front foot when Rohan Vaughan caused problems throughout the area as he placed pressure on Pendleton, and he took an effort at goal but Sayer did well to nudge the ball out wide.
Birmingham City counter-attacked soon after and found the equaliser when Alvaro Rente sent the ball to Tattum, he dribbled into an open space and fired the ball straight through Forshaw.
Despite a long-range effort from Adam McCoy when he looped the ball with force towards goal, the whistle blew with the final score being 1-1.
Extra Time
Early onto the second period of extra time Blues' Mazwi found himself head-on with the goal, he managed to pick up a rebound off the post from Tattum and slotted the ball straight into the bottom corner leaving Forshaw behind.
Clarets' captain Jack Rogers moments before the final whistle, managed to put the ball straight into the bottom corner past Sayer, moving the game to a penalty shootout.
Penalties
After twists and turns in the penalty shoot out, Birmingham found themselves 3-1 ahead, before Forshaw made two crucial saves to add to an earlier one.
Olly Pimlott found the winner with a calmly taken spot kick straight down the middle, which sent the Clarets through to the next round.
