Debutant Marcus Edwards fires Clarets into fifth round

Marcus Edwards' second-half goal saw the Clarets progress into the fifth round of the Emirates FA Cup on Saturday afternoon, with a 1-0 victory over Premier League side Southampton.

Burnley created plenty of opportunities throughout the afternoon, before substitute and debutant Edwards turned home the winning goal in the 77th minute at St Mary's, which saw the Clarets extend their unbeaten run in all competitions to 20 matches.

Head Coach Scott Parker named eight changes from the side that beat Oxford United on Tuesday night.

Vaclav Hladký replaced James Trafford inbetween the sticks, with Oliver Sonne, Joe Worrall and Lucas Pires coming into the defence.

There was a full debut handed to Jonjo Shelvey in midfield, who lined-up alongside Hannibal.

Manuel Benson was given his first start this campaign, partnering Jeremy Sarmiento and Ashley Barnes in attack.

The Clarets started bright and carved open an early chance when Benson played in Pires through on goal, with the Brazilian playing it back to Benson inside the area, only to see his shot denied on the line by Welington.

CJ Egan-Riley, who was captaining the side for the first time, then went on a terrific driving run from his own half, beating several Saints midfielders, before being hacked down outside the area for a free-kick.

Southampton’s first chance on goal came midway through the first-half, as Ryan Manning saw his strike from inside the box denied by the legs of Hladký, before Worrall then blocked Tyler Dibling’s follow-up strike.

Burnley had another opportunity a few minutes after, as Barnes played Sarmiento through on goal with a lofted pass, but Alex McCarthy was there to deny the Ecuador international.

The Saints had another effort on goal 10 minutes before the break, however Dibling’s drilled strike could only ripple the side netting of Hladký‘s goal and that turned out to be the final chance of the first-half.

Following a goalless first-half, the hosts came out on the front foot and had an early opportunity when Dibling teed up Manning to fire towards goal, but Hladký was there to keep out the full-back’s shot.

With the game approaching the hour mark, Parker turned to his bench and made a triple change, which saw Maxime Estève, Joe Bauress and Edwards come on for Benson, Shelvey and Egan-Riley.

Estève was then straight into the action, after making an exceptional block to deny Dibling from unleashing a strike on goal inside the area.

A chance fell Barnes' way with just over 20 minutes left on the clock, but the striker just couldn’t get quite enough power into his strike to trouble McCarthy in the Saints goal.

Despite still being goalless, chances were being created for both sides and the Saints were the next to try and break the deadlock, as Kamaldeen Sulemana cut inside onto his right foot and curled an effort just wide of the target.

Burnley's persistence eventually paid off, as Parker's side clinched the opening goal through debutant Edwards, with the forward controlling it and turning it home from close range following Hannibal's squared pass.

Nathan Redmond then returned to action for the first time in over a year, following a lengthy spell on the sidelines, the winger was back on the pitch at a stadium where he spent seven seasons.

Despite the hosts enjoying a spell of possession in the final stages of the cup tie, Burnley held on to ensure they would be in Monday night's fifth round draw.
