Marcus Edwards netted twice in Burnley's pre-season friendly at Shrewsbury Town on Saturday as the Clarets continued preparations ahead of the start of the Premier League campaign in three weeks.

Speaking after the game the 26-year-old was pleased with his contribution in what he described was a 'good run out' for the team.

“I think it was a good day for us, still getting fit, still working in the new formations, new patterns, new pressing, so it’s good that we’re all playing together. It was a good run out today."

Burnley's squad was split into two with games at Shrewsbury and Huddersfield taking place simultaneously so plenty of players including the new summer signings could get valuable minutes.

"That's what pre-season is about to know what your players can do, playing with the whole squad who are going to be a big part of the season. We’ve signed some good players and as a team we’re very welcoming. They’ve integrated already.”

The winger scored a well-placed free-kick and a penalty on the day, but it was the free-kick that he was most pleased to see curl past the keeper.

“It took me back to my old days when I used to take free-kicks, so it was nice to do it again!”

Finally, with only a few weeks to go until the season opener at Spurs, Edwards is enjoying pre-season preparations and can't wait to return to league action.

“I always like pre-season, getting back into the routine of things, it’s hard training, every day you’ve got to push yourself. Pre-season is always nice. It’s different to doing it in Portugal, in England it’s actually harder! But getting pushed to my limits, it’s good.

“I’m very excited. Everyone wants to play in the Premier League so you can’t not be excited, the whole team is excited. We’re just ready to go.”
